Between all the photos and video tours, you might think you’ve seen every corner of our house. As it turns out, there’s one room you haven’t been shown—until now.
Hidden beneath our sunroom is a private-entry basement, accessible only by stepping outside and down a few stairs. Because it’s tucked away and not immediately visible from the main living areas, we’ve been treating it as a secondary storage space rather than a finished room.

Out of sight, out of mind has meant out of control: the basement has become a catch-all for boxes, surplus furniture, and odds and ends we didn’t want cluttering our main rooms. It’s not a completed living space—no drywall, no finished flooring—so many homeowners would reasonably use it for storage. Still, the accumulation has gotten to the point where it’s difficult to move around in there.

We’ve been saving items in that tiny room for a long time because we’ve been planning a garage sale. After more than a year of stockpiling, we finally set a date: Saturday, April 26th. With the sale on the calendar, it’s time to sort, price, and organize everything so we can reclaim the basement and make it useful beyond storage.
We’d love your help. If you have reliable garage sale tips—anything that’s worked for you when it comes to advertising, pricing, staging, or logistics—please share them. Practical advice like how to price items to sell, what days and times attract the most buyers, the best ways to promote a neighborhood sale, and how to present boxes of mixed goods so they don’t look like clutter would be especially useful.
Some of the tactics we’re considering include grouping similar items together to make shopping easier, clearly labeling prices with bright tags, posting local flyers and social media announcements the week of the sale, and keeping a cash box with small change and a portable card reader for buyers who don’t carry cash. We’ll also sort things into donate, sell, and toss piles to minimize what comes back into the house.
Once the basement is emptied and the garage sale is over, we have plans to turn this space into a functional bonus room. The renovation ideas we’re excited about include fresh paint to brighten the room, updated lighting to make the area feel welcoming, a cozy rug to define a seating zone, and a simple screen or cabinet to conceal the water heater. With a few pieces of furniture and some thoughtful finishing touches, this tucked-away space could become a practical workshop, playroom, or guest area.
Until we get there, though, it’s all hands on deck. Clearing out the basement will not only prepare us for the garage sale but also reveal how much usable square footage we actually have. We’ll document the before-and-after transformation and share photos and lessons learned once the project moves forward.
If you’ve held successful garage sales or completed a similar basement-to-living-space renovation, please send your best tips. Specifics about pricing strategies, signage that draws traffic, how to keep items secure during a sale, and ways to quickly stage items for attractive photos would be especially helpful. We appreciate any practical, tried-and-true advice you can offer.
Stay tuned for updates and after photos—we’re eager to reclaim this space and turn it into something we’ll use every day.
