My birthday arrived early this year when we kicked off the weekend with a trip to Williamsburg last Friday. That little getaway set the tone: cards, parcels, and thoughtful surprises kept arriving in the days that followed. Since today is actually my 26th birthday, I wanted to share the highlights and show off the lovely gifts that made this one of my favorite birthdays yet.
One of the sweetest surprises was a playful photo of my baby boy dressed up for the occasion, sent by my best friend Heather. She even photoshopped him into perfectly festive attire—an instant favorite that captures his personality and made me smile the moment I opened it.

My husband pulled at my heartstrings with a truly unique present: a custom portrait of Burger cut from black paper by a talented silhouette artist. It amazes me how much character can be conveyed in a single silhouette—snuggly and squirmy, a little squishy and utterly sweet. Even delicate details like his eyelashes were captured. The one-of-a-kind paper portrait looks beautiful on our asymmetrical gallery wall and is a constant reminder of his lovable quirks.

Because of the new kitchen, I received a charming array of cupcake-themed gifts from John’s parents. They gifted me a cupcake carrying caddy, pastel sugared sprinkles, and a selection of gourmet cupcake mixes in tempting flavors—vanilla strawberry, poppy lemon, and chocolate caramel among them. These treats pair perfectly with the festive cupcake pajama pants that were part of the same themed gift set. Small kitchen gifts like these are both practical and joyful for anyone who likes to bake and celebrate at home.

Among the more elegant offerings were oversized glass vases from ZGallerie. Both John’s parents and his sister contributed to this generous gift, and the vases are beautiful additions to our home décor. Their size and shape give us lots of options for floral arrangements or simply as sculptural accents on a console table or mantel.

Then came the big reveal: John gave me a silver iPod nano. He preloaded it with photos—many of them of Burger—and packed it with music and videos. His older sisters and their partners also gifted me two Beatles anthologies, which made the present even sweeter. Believe it or not, this is my first iPod; I’m apparently the last person to join the white earphone club. The new nano can play videos, store images, and hold a large music library, so I’m looking forward to using it on my daily three-mile walks with Burger. I suspect he won’t mind too much when I’m listening to a few tunes instead of focusing solely on the sound of his paws on the pavement.

All in all, this birthday felt wonderfully personal. Between thoughtful gifts, handmade touches, and family generosity, it truly was one of the best birthdays I can remember. I’m grateful for the creativity, care, and time everyone put into making the day feel special—and for the little moments, like watching Burger curiously inspect every new package, that made the celebration uniquely ours.
