Maybe we should rename this site WCL: Wire Chair Love. Because who found four amazing vintage wire kitchen chairs for just $15 each? This girl. (points to self, notices a smear of peanut butter on one thumb, licks it off, and beams at the pretty new chairs)
Picture this: we wandered into our favorite local thrift shop—one we pop into a few times a month—mostly to browse. More often than not we leave empty-handed, but this time the scene was different. From across the room I spotted the chairs. Angels, perhaps, might have sung. I ran toward them as if racing to rescue treasure, determined not to let anyone else claim them.
The chairs themselves were tucked beneath limp, plastic-wrapped covers that didn’t do them any favors, but we could see the clean, modern lines beneath. Those lines promised a perfect complement to our chunky wooden dining table, so we snapped them up.
We’ve been aiming for a rustic-meets-modern style in our eating area. Our old white chairs—hand-me-downs from my NYC days—had been serving as temporary placeholders for years, but they were a bit too small and dainty next to the hefty table. Now the larger wire chairs give the table the presence it needed while still keeping the room feeling open.
Interestingly, these chairs reminded me of a dining room photo I’ve admired online where similar wire chairs appear in a silver finish. I love those spotted cushions in the photo, and the similarity helped me imagine these chairs in a few different finishes and fabrics. The old white chairs have been moved to the office for now; they’re versatile and handy to have around for extra seating at parties, so they’ll likely find a permanent spot somewhere else in the house.
We were pleasantly surprised to pay only $15 apiece; they were originally marked at $25, and priced down after sitting unsold for a while. It’s funny to think I raced to claim them when they had already been overlooked for weeks. Because they were inexpensive, I don’t feel guilty about investing in durable, food-friendly fabric for new cushions when the time comes.
Transporting four large chairs in a small car required a bit of spatial creativity. We managed it thanks to nesting and careful placement: one chair in the trunk, two nested in the front passenger area, and the fourth tucked beside Clara’s carseat while I squeezed in beside her. It was a tight fit, but we made it work.
Once they were home, we carried them into the kitchen and set them around the table. Instantly, the room felt more balanced. The chairs add height that the table needed, and their vertical lines play nicely with our horizontal rope chandelier. The overall effect is cohesive without feeling contrived.
We’re undecided about the gold paint. It’s charming but might be temporary. Other colors we’ve considered include darker tones that would echo the stained lower cabinets—oil-rubbed bronze, charcoal, or a deep chocolate—or something crisp and lighter like white or a soft mint. For now we’re living with them unchanged until we’re certain about a final color choice.
For cushions, my eventual goal is to make leather or vinyl pads like the ones I’ve admired elsewhere, but in the short term we’ve had good results using folded faux sheepskin on each seat. It might sound like a food trap, but the sheepskins are machine washable, easy to remove, and simple to shake out between meals. They’ve been surprisingly practical for daily use and have made the chairs comfortable during our test period.
Comfort was a priority: we spend a lot of time at this table, and these chairs needed to be more than visually pleasing. With the temporary cushions in place, they’ve been comfortable for everyday dining. The seats have a slight recline, so you don’t typically lean back too far, but when you do it’s comfortable—similar to reclining in spindle-backed dining chairs or a wooden rocking chair. Add a thoughtful expression and you might look like you’re pondering life’s big questions—or how much you love marshmallows.
So that’s our updated kitchen view, which is a definite upgrade from the scene we had just a month after moving in. Are you hunting for anything specific at thrift stores lately? If so, what treasures have you found?
