This is delightfully egg-centric. Yes, I really did start with a pun — they’re hard to resist this time of year. We were genuinely thrilled to find an adorable, perfectly seasonal display of nature tucked into one of our old DIY projects. Can you guess what’s happening in the photo below?
It’s a tiny nest with two sweet eggs. And where did the birds build it? Right inside one of our homemade porch lanterns. We originally made those lanterns from inexpensive bulb covers, turning them into candle-lit porch decor — and apparently they make excellent real estate for local wildlife, too.

Mr. and Mrs. Bird placed their nest directly on top of the candle inside the middle lantern. It’s as charming as it sounds — even the delivery driver paused to admire it. Little surprises like this are a wonderful reminder of how wildlife adapts to our everyday objects.
Speaking of eggs, we dug up an old post about natural egg-dyeing techniques that makes for a lovely Easter craft. Using simple, natural ingredients to color eggs is fun and eco-friendly — a great project if you’re looking for an easy, wholesome activity to share with family or friends.
We’re also excited about the warmer weather finally arriving here in Richmond. After a long, drawn-out winter, a stretch of 80-degree days feels like a small miracle. Warmer temperatures mean the yard is showing off: nearly every tree seems to be producing buds, and a number of our shrubs are bursting into bloom. It’s a joyful, colorful reminder that spring has truly arrived.
Of course, all this blooming beauty comes with a cost — my allergies have returned with a vengeance. If anyone has effective, natural allergy remedies to recommend, I’m all ears. I’ve tried local honey and a Neti pot with only limited relief, and I run a good air purifier while staying well hydrated, but I’m still battling sniffles. Even so, the payoff of seeing the yard fill with blossoms makes it worthwhile.
So that’s our little egg-centric discovery and a quick update from the exterior of our home. The nest in the lantern is an unexpected and delightful addition to the porch, and it has inspired a renewed appreciation for the simple ways nature finds its place in our lives. Do you have any amusing or unusual bird’s-nest stories? Last year we found a nest tucked inside a bike helmet in the garage — not something you expect to encounter during weekend cleanups.
If you’ve been taking photos of blooms, buds, nests, or other outdoor highlights, we’d love to hear about them. Spring brings so many small moments worth celebrating, from unexpected wildlife to the first bright blossoms on a shrub. Share your stories and photos — it’s always fun to compare the little seasonal surprises our yards and neighborhoods reveal.
