Transforming Our Bedroom with Rich Blue Paint

[ad_1]

No, we’re not cooking in the bedroom—that’s simply the name of our new paint color. You may have already spotted it in a previous post about the color palette we’re leaning toward for this house. We’re thrilled with how it turned out. For the master bedroom we narrowed the options to Sparrow, Knoxville Gray, Sea Star, and Black Pepper. When we held the swatches up, Black Pepper won because it has depth and a cool, slightly faded quality. It feels fresh while also suggesting a classic, historical tone that suits this home perfectly.

Because this room is large, bright, and framed with crisp white trim and doors, we felt comfortable going deeper than the softer blues, grays, tans, and browns in our overall palette. We love a cozy, enveloping color in the bedroom. That said, we’re still at the beginning of decorating, so please ignore the following temporary details:

  • missing window treatments
  • blank walls without art
  • a bare ceiling (we might paint it or try painted textured wallpaper later)
  • no ceiling light fixture yet
  • temporary furniture placement—the pieces are where they landed when we moved, and the new dresser isn’t in its final spot
  • two benches at the foot of the bed; we’d prefer a single bench, ideally found secondhand and reupholstered
  • two off-center windows on the wall to the right of the bed (we have a plan for those)

Black Pepper isn’t a flat black—its undertones lean navy, and it reads as a faded, sophisticated blue-gray in person. It may be our favorite dark paint so far. To show undertones more clearly, we often compare a swatch against nearby colors rather than viewing it alone; that context reveals subtleties that a single swatch can’t convey.

To prepare the room for painting, we moved everything to the center and covered the furniture with a protective drop cloth. We usually paint over hardwood floors without issue, but if you’re nervous about drips you can protect the floors as well. In our experience, fresh drips wipe up easily; if a drop dries, we can usually lift it with a careful pop using a fingernail.

We started with a coat of tinted primer to improve coverage, hide some wall lines that came from past work, and ensure the final color looked as rich and consistent as possible. We used a no-VOC primer tinted to pair with a dark blue-gray shade. The primer alone looked a bit chalky in photos, but in person it did its job and made us eager to get paint on top.

The difference between the tinted primer and the final Black Pepper paint was immediately noticeable. For the walls we used a no-VOC Natura paint by Benjamin Moore and only needed one coat for full coverage—an uncommon win for us, likely thanks to the tinted primer. There were exceptions: the three twelve-paned glass windows required five hand-applied coats total (two coats of primer and three coats of paint) and some careful scraping to clean up edges. So, you win some and you lose some.

We chose an eggshell sheen for the deep color. It reads almost matte, which enhances the chic, refined feel. The hue is bold enough to make a statement but restrained enough to let the headboard, rugs, and pillows take center stage. It walks a fine line between a dark neutral and a color that still has personality.

Looking ahead, beyond addressing the untrimmed windows and adding art, we’re seriously considering built-ins. Our idea is to create an entire wall of built-ins behind the bed, complete with a window seat for the small window on that wall. Then we’ll move the new dresser to the wall opposite the bed so it becomes a focal point we can appreciate every morning. Built-ins would add storage and display space and give the bed that cozy, tucked-in feeling—something we loved about our first house’s bedroom.

One practical reason for built-ins: the two windows on the back wall are off-center. Adding built-ins along the bed wall will visually center the bed and bring balance and function to the room. That solution feels both attractive and practical.

For now we’re enjoying the moodier wall color and how it makes the crown molding and trim pop. Fresh flooring and a new paint color truly transform a space—already this bedroom feels more intentional, even with a long to-do list still ahead.

Anyone else falling for a new paint color?
