Since announcing the super exciting challenge last week, we’ve continued to make steady progress on our porch makeover for Better Homes & Garden’s 48-Hour Challenge with Home Depot. This update brings a few fresh details about what we’re painting, what we’re building, and a handful of crafty touches we plan to add to tie the whole space together.
On the painting front, we’re taking a subtle-but-impactful approach: soft, understated stripes that add texture and visual interest without overpowering the porch’s relaxed vibe. The stripes will be a nod to classic porch styling while keeping the overall palette calm and inviting. We’re testing color samples and refining stripe widths to strike the right balance between pattern and simplicity. The aim is to make the area feel cohesive and polished, not busy.
As for the build list, we’ve designed a few specific zones to make the porch both functional and comfortable. One of the features we’re most excited about is giving Burger his own dedicated spot — a small, cozy zone where he can lounge comfortably while still being part of the action. This involves creating a low-profile, durable surface and adding soft layers like cushions and blankets so the space works for both a pet and people during long afternoons on the porch.
We’re also converting a planter into a small side table. Repurposing the planter lets us add functional furniture without bringing in too much new stuff, and it helps keep the aesthetic unified. The conversion involves stabilizing the planter, adding a level top surface, and finishing it in a color and texture that complements the porch stripes. The result will be a practical piece that doubles as decor: a planter-turned-table that anchors a seating area and holds drinks, books, or a potted plant.

Beyond paint and builds, we’ve sketched out several simple, handmade accents that will lend character and a personal touch. One idea we’re eager to try are twine mobiles — lightweight, sculptural elements that hang from the porch ceiling to create gentle movement and interest. The mobiles will be made from natural materials and finished in neutral tones so they complement the stripes and furniture without becoming the focal point. We’re also considering small DIY planters and a couple of easy textile projects, like throw pillow covers or a woven seat pad, to add texture and comfort.
Throughout the process, our focus has been on making thoughtful choices: selecting finishes that hold up to weather, choosing materials with a timeless look, and designing pieces that are both beautiful and useful. The 48-hour timeline is a fun constraint that pushes us to prioritize, plan efficiently, and work with smart, simple solutions rather than complicated builds.
If you’d like to see the full project overview and our step-by-step plan, you can read the update on BHG.com where we outline each element in more detail. We’ve included photos, materials lists, and a few tips for executing similar projects at home. We’ll be sharing another progress update next week with pictures of the painted stripes in place, the planter turned into a side table, and some of the handmade accents installed. We’re excited to see how the space comes together and to share the final result once the 48-hour challenge wraps up.
