Make Faux Pumpkins Look Real: Pro Tips for Lifelike Decor

[ad_1]

Nothing says “come on up and get some candy” quite like a pair of cheerful pumpkins — even if they’re the fake kind. Last year we found ourselves in a bit of a Halloween scramble. Mere hours before trick-or-treaters arrived, our house still looked unprepared and the remaining real pumpkins at the grocery store were soft and spoiled. With no time to spare, we took Plan B and headed to the craft store hoping for something quick and festive. We came home with two inexpensive faux pumpkins and set them on the porch just in time to hand out candy.

Fast forward to this year: instead of discarding those budget-friendly imitations, I decided to give them a simple makeover. The original bright orange color worked from the curb, but up close it clashed with our brick exterior and vibrant red front door. Rather than toss them, I thought a subtle update could make them blend better with our home’s aesthetic while still feeling seasonal.

White and cream pumpkins have been popular for a while — they’re versatile, modern, and pair well with many door and porch colors. I used some leftover exterior paint to transform the faux pumpkins into a softer, cream-white tone. The goal was a natural, understated finish rather than a stark, blinding white. Using exterior paint ensured the finish would hold up to dew and cool autumn weather, and it only took one thin coat for full coverage on these particular pumpkins.

The entire project was budget-friendly and fast. I paired the painted pumpkins with a few seasonally discounted flowers and some small ceramic pots in complementary colors and sizes. Grouping the pumpkins with potted mums and varying pot heights created visual interest without a lot of effort or expense. The final arrangement felt polished and welcoming while remaining festive enough for Halloween.

Here are a few practical tips if you want to try this quick makeover yourself:

  • Prep first: Wipe down faux pumpkins to remove dust so the paint adheres evenly.
  • Choose the right paint: Exterior latex paint works well for outdoor displays and dries quickly.
  • Use thin coats: One or two light coats prevent drips and give a more natural finish than a single heavy coat.
  • Accessorize with texture: Add small ceramic pots, burlap, or a simple tray to elevate the display without spending much.
  • Mix real and faux: If you enjoy carving or cooking with pumpkins, buy a couple of real ones for the porch table and keep faux ones for long-lasting decor.

All told, Project Pumpkin cost less than $10 and took very little time, thanks to sale flowers and a small stash of paint. We’ll probably still pick up one or two real pumpkins to carve and to roast the seeds — that’s a seasonal treat we look forward to — but the painted faux pumpkins provide a neat, cohesive look that complements our red door much better than the original bright orange did.

Have you given cheap or thrifted items a simple refresh for seasonal decorating? What last-minute buys have saved the day for your holiday projects? I’d love to hear budget-friendly ideas and small hacks that make a big visual impact.
