When we first saw Rhoda’s guest room makeover, the transformation felt nothing short of dramatic. Her thoughtful choices, resourceful shopping, and creative repurposing combined to turn a modest space into a chic, welcoming retreat. Here’s the note she sent to us:
I really enjoy reading your blog & congrats on the success and press you’ve gotten this past year! I know you have asked for redesigns before from your readers, so I thought I’d share a recent project with you. This is my newly redone guestroom, which I titled From Granny to Beachy Glam. In its before state, I just used some old linens that I had to make the room comfortable as a guestroom for a couple of years. Then, I found a great black/white damask comforter set (at a yard sale) and that got the ball rolling on the whole room redo. Thanks a bunch, and enjoy! – Rhoda
Before and After: A Clear Direction
Here’s the original before photo showing the room’s simple, lived-in look. The old linens and the darker metal finishes gave the space a more traditional, somewhat dated feel.

And here’s the stunning after. The new palette, textures, and well-chosen accessories instantly modernize the room while keeping it warm and inviting for guests.

Smart Budgeting and Resourceful Finds
One of the most impressive aspects of Rhoda’s update is the budget. She kept the entire makeover under $500 by shopping sales, browsing yard sales, and selecting a few statement pieces that set the tone for the room. The purchase that started it all was a black-and-white damask comforter she found at a yard sale. That single find inspired the color scheme and guided subsequent purchases.
She balanced thrifted finds with discount-store accents, using budget-friendly retailers for complementary items without overspending. Prioritizing one or two key items—like the comforter—and then building around them is an effective strategy to stretch a limited budget while still achieving a high-impact result.
Repurposing and Personal Touches
Rhoda also made the most of existing pieces through simple, creative updates. She painted the bronze mirror from the before picture to better match the new color palette and slipcovered the corner chair for a cohesive, polished look. Those low-cost, DIY steps delivered big visual returns and kept the room feeling fresh and intentional.
Repurposing is a practical and sustainable approach: a coat of paint, new upholstery, or updated hardware can completely change an object’s character without the expense of replacement. These small interventions are ideal for anyone wanting a noticeable change without a heavy price tag or major renovations.
Design Lessons from the Makeover
Rhoda’s project highlights several useful design lessons that readers can apply to their own rooms:
- Choose a focal point—like a patterned comforter—to define your palette and guide accessory choices.
- Mix thrifted and budget-store finds with a few refinished heirlooms to create layered, personal spaces.
- Use paint and slipcovers to refresh existing furniture and decor inexpensively.
- Keep scale and balance in mind: coordinate patterns, solids, and textures so the room feels cohesive rather than busy.
A Welcoming, Stylish Result
What began as a modest guestroom became a stylish, comfortable space that reflects Rhoda’s personality and resourcefulness. The result is both glamorous and relaxed—perfect for making guests feel at home. We appreciate Rhoda sharing her before-and-after photos and the thoughtful process behind them. This makeover is a great reminder that a small budget, a clear design direction, and a willingness to repurpose can produce impressive, long-lasting results.
Thanks again to Rhoda for sending in this inspiring transformation. We always enjoy seeing how creative solutions and careful choices can turn ordinary rooms into spaces people love to use and admire.
