Low-Maintenance Houseplants That Thrive Indoors

[ad_1]

We’re sharing fresh photos of the plants around our home, along with a few ideas about where to place them and what to pot them in. We’re partial to clean white ceramic planters from Ikea—they’re affordable, timeless, and work in almost any room. Small pots live on windowsills and stacked books, while larger ones sit on the floor to anchor a corner and help improve air quality. Their simple lines keep the look modern rather than dated.

In the guest bedroom we have a cheerful burro tail succulent. These trailing succulents are forgiving and low-maintenance—just a little water about once a week and they thrive, making them perfect for windowsills or narrow shelves.

Our paperwhite bulbs also bloomed right in time for the holidays. One advantage of using neutral white planters is mobility—you can move plants around without worrying about whether the new setting “matches.” For the paperwhites we simply nudged the burro tail a few inches to let the flowers take the spotlight.

In the bedroom we keep a large corn plant, a popular choice for bedroom corners because of its upright form and air-purifying reputation. Nearby, a little English ivy trails in the window, adding a draping, textural contrast to the taller foliage.

Back in the den, another burro tail sits on the TV stand. We arranged it alongside a ceramic horse head for a balanced vignette that mixes organic shapes with sculptural accents—casual, layered styling that feels collected rather than staged.

We also keep some ultra low-maintenance pieces: dried grasses in floating vases and two large hydrangea heads that dried with a lovely deep plum tone. Dried botanicals add texture and color without any upkeep.

In the third bedroom we have an orchid—one of two we recently picked up and found surprisingly easy to care for. A weekly drink and bright, indirect light are usually all they need. The second orchid lives on the fireplace mantel in the den, where it brings a touch of elegance.

We also love using free clippings from the yard—a few leafy branches in a short clear vase look fresh and last surprisingly long in water, often putting out roots after a while.

In the corner of the guest bedroom we keep a croton, which provides fiery, variegated foliage throughout the year and serves as an easy color pop. It’s an affordable statement plant that brings warmth to the space.

Another burro tail occupies the kitchen windowsill, content to soak up whatever sun the room provides. Succulents like these are forgiving, attractive, and versatile—great for kitchens, bathrooms, or any small ledge.
