We’ve been excited to share this cheerful before-and-after makeover, and it’s finally complete. This project was especially fun because it’s a little girl’s room—kids’ spaces are always a treat to design. Working with a tight budget of just $200, we reinvented thrift-store finds and picked a few pieces from Ikea to transform eight-year-old Olivia’s bedroom into a playful, personality-filled space she’ll love.

Olivia’s home is a new construction, and her mom wanted a room full of lively pink and plenty of charm for her fun-loving daughter. The room already had great bones—a large picture window and a built-in shelf behind the bed—so our goal was to amplify those features without overspending. We started by hunting for the right furniture, and a neat little desk at a local thrift store immediately caught our eye. It had clean lines and open shelving, and at $15 it was an instant yes.

After a coat of oil-based primer and two coats of a vibrant pink (we used Benjamin Moore’s Milano Red), the desk went from tired to spirited. To protect the surface and add a modern touch, we placed a custom-cut piece of plexiglass on top—an inexpensive solution that keeps the desk looking fresh through lots of drawing and crafting.

We continued the thrifty, clever approach across the room. A $5 thrift-store chair paired with two Ikea magnet boards dressed in playful wrapping paper added texture and function to Olivia’s workspace. A $20 Ikea lamp introduced an additional pattern and completed the layered look. Olivia is a self-proclaimed office supply enthusiast, so a tidy, colorful desk made perfect sense for her personality.

To create visual balance and extend the punchy pink, we painted a hand-me-down dresser the same bold hue and placed a round green Ikea rug in front of it. The rug adds contrast, ties in with the bed skirt, and reinforces the room’s playful color story. Curtains from Ikea framed the window with breezy grommet panels, softening the light while keeping the view intact.

We also reupholstered the headboard by hand to add texture and warmth (see our simple tutorial text mentioned in the original post for step-by-step guidance). Replacing the duvet with a graphic, modern print finished the look and made the bed the room’s focal point—an affordable change that noticeably elevated the overall design.

To personalize the space, we displayed several of Olivia’s favorite books on the built-in shelf above the bed—some even share her name, which made the arrangement feel uniquely hers. Small, meaningful touches like this help a room feel lived-in and special without costing a lot.

Below is a concise breakdown of the budget so you can see how the total came together. We rounded prices up for clarity and still stayed right at our $200 target.
