Add Extra Shelves and Install a Microwave in Your Pantry

[ad_1]

There’s a little celebration happening in my pantry—figuratively speaking. It’s not really a party, and the space is far too small for a real gathering, but I’m excited about how it’s finally coming together. The pantry sits tucked behind the fridge, and until recently it was a cluttered, underused closet that desperately needed some attention.

The only “before” photo I could dig up shows it with the door open. The old wallpaper and brown trim made me think it dated from before we moved in, but the shelves were already filled with our groceries, so clearly this was taken after we settled in.

As you can see, the space lacked any real organization. There was a pile of bags on the floor and items stacked without a system. After living with that chaos for several months, and remembering how we managed food storage in our previous homes (from upper cabinets to elaborate pantry-cabinet contraptions), we were eager for a more functional pantry closet—something with the convenience of the classic pantries we both grew up with.

One of our first big ideas was to move the microwave into the pantry. It’s not the most conventional placement, but after removing the over-the-range microwave and experimenting with hiding a microwave behind a cabinet door in a past kitchen, we felt comfortable trying the same approach in our deep pantry. It would clear valuable counter space and the pantry offered enough room for ventilation if we kept the door open while the microwave ran.

The obstacle was simple: there was no outlet inside the pantry. We solved that right before Christmas when our regular electricians came by and installed an outlet exactly where we wanted it. It cost about $110, but it finally gave the microwave a permanent home, opened up counter space, and put the pantry a big step closer to functional.

Using the microwave inside the pantry has worked well for over a month, but making room for it required sacrificing one of the shelves. The straightforward fix was to reposition the remaining shelves to use the vertical space more efficiently. It sounds simple, but sometimes the easiest projects take a while to move up the to-do list.

Yesterday we emptied the pantry—an oddly satisfying task that revealed forgotten snacks and long-lost baking supplies—and got to work adjusting the shelving. Our initial plan was to lower the shelf that would hold the microwave so the shelf above could be returned to its original spot. That plan changed when we realized we had also moved the trash can into the pantry. Lowering the microwave shelf any further would have blocked the trash can lid from opening.

Quick trash can note: we brought the trash can into the pantry on a trial basis over a month ago, worrying it might smell or otherwise be problematic. In practice it hasn’t been an issue—especially with a lidded can—so it’s stayed put.

Instead of moving the microwave shelf down, we reinstalled the missing shelf above the microwave shelf, slightly higher than its original position. That created a half-height shelf ideal for cans and small items. I used a jar of pasta sauce as a spacer to estimate the right clearance—practical and precise enough for the job.

Next, I removed the old nailed-in shelf braces with a pry bar, marked level lines for the new positions, and reattached the braces with screws. I double-checked everything with a level to ensure the shelves sat straight and secure.

The whole task took about an hour, most of which was spent emptying and refilling the pantry, taking photos, and rediscovering snacks. The new low-profile shelf is already proving useful: it provides a dedicated spot for shorter items that used to get shoved to the back or clutter other shelves.

We haven’t fully restocked the pantry yet because there’s more to do: priming, painting, and adding organization systems. We plan to install organizers for the larger shelves, consider door-mounted storage, and cover some surfaces with wipeable shelf paper to keep things bright and tidy. For now, the pantry feels “half-baked”—partly organized, partly waiting for a final finish.

Once we paint and let everything dry, we’ll be able to arrange items more thoughtfully so the space looks intentional instead of like a grocery store mid-loot. We’ll share the completed result when it’s all ready.

It’s satisfying to see the pantry clean and empty for now, even if the rest of the kitchen is a different story. How do you organize your pantry? Do you rely on bins, clear containers, or shelf dividers? Any systems you love or tricks you swear by? We’ve both admired those picture-perfect pantries on Pinterest—Sherry sometimes just stares at them and calls them “magical unicorn pantries.”

If anyone is hosting a pantry-friendly get-together, let me know—I’ll bring my friend Brick. He’s a hoot.
