Episode 63: Smarter Ways to Manage and Spend Money

[ad_1]

Who wouldn’t want a little more cash in the bank? We spoke with a money expert about the most common places people overspend and gathered his best advice for creating—and sticking to—an easy household budget. Sticking to a budget is the single best way to save more each month. In this episode we also share simple, low-pressure techniques for negotiating with contractors (one short sentence recently saved us $1,500), talk through the sometimes tricky process of restoring our vintage pink stove, and offer a simple craft idea to keep little hands busy while you tackle projects around the house.

What’s New

Vintage pink stove plans

  • We previously posted about our plans for the vintage pink stove we bought for the beach house; the original post includes photos and details about the restoration. The electrician had to navigate a lot of exposed wiring while we repaired the unit; the backplate had been removed during the work, which is why the wires were visible in the photo.

  • If you missed our recent episode about repaving the driveway, check our episode archive for that conversation, where we cover costs, contractor communication, and decisions that made the project run more smoothly.

Dr. Budgets

  • We spoke with budgeting expert Daniel Rodriguez, who shared practical tips for spotting overspending and building a sustainable household budget. He also offers a short ebook with actionable ways to jump-start your savings.
  • During the chat we mentioned Mint, a free online budgeting tool that many people find helpful for tracking spending and setting goals.

Budgeting notes and tools

  • Daniel talked about cutting traditional cable to reduce recurring costs; we described our own experience cutting cable in a previous episode and how that lowered our monthly bills.
  • We mentioned grocery pickup services like Kroger’s ClickList as a way to save time and avoid impulse purchases, which can help your monthly budget add up more favorably.
  • One of our recurring personal challenges is a month-long water-only plan we call “Aqua-tober,” a simple way to reduce spending on beverages and reset habits.
  • Daniel also experimented with a “no-spend” month to force a short-term financial reset and boost awareness of discretionary spending.
  • We referenced a portion-control meal plan we tried in the past; it was a helpful experiment in both budgeting and simplifying grocery decisions.

We’re Digging

Mermaid fabric-wrapped canvas

  • While out shopping we spotted mermaid fabric wrapped around canvases at a jewelry and art shop. The sequins are reversible—one side gold, the other silver—so kids can swipe their fingers across the fabric to “draw” images or reveal patterns. It’s an inexpensive, playful way to keep little ones entertained while you work on projects.
  • Several retailers offer similar mermaid-sequin fabric panels in a variety of colors and sizes that work well for wrapping canvases or covering bulletin boards in playrooms and kids’ spaces. A large 3′ x 4′ panel is a handy size for many DIY projects.
  • We also found a few product listings for items useful for traveling families, like compact inflatable toddler mattresses that include an air pump and pack small for trips. We’ve used one reliably for several years without issues.

Finally, a note of thanks to Thomas Avenue Ceramics for sponsoring this episode. They offer a selection of beautiful tiles suitable for kitchens, baths, and floors. We selected several favorites from their collection and highlighted them in the show. New customers can often find introductory promotions on first orders.
