Declutter and Organize a Seriously Messy Garage

[ad_1]

Raise your hand if you knew we had a garage. I’m not surprised if most of you still have both hands firmly planted on your keyboards.

We do have a garage: a detached metal building that could fit two cars, if only it hadn’t been filled with clutter for more than two years. We avoided showing it much—other than a few photos with the doors closed during our wedding—because it was, frankly, embarrassing. At its worst this past winter it was overflowing with debris left over from a major kitchen remodel and a long list of items that didn’t have a home.

To be fair, the garage started out as a temporary storage space for my sister’s furniture while she waited for her new house to be finished. That was the first step toward losing our garage to “stuff.” Once boxes, chairs, mattresses and garden supplies moved in, the garage stopped being a place for cars and started functioning as a catchall. Over time the pile-up grew to include empty boxes, mismatched furniture, yard tools, a few forgotten toys and a couple of projects that were never completed.

Earlier this year I decided it was time to reclaim the space. Part male pride and part practical planning, the goal was simple: clear out the junk, sort what we wanted to keep, and organize what remained so this detached garage could finally serve its intended purpose again. Fortunately, my sister’s house was finished around the same time, so a lot of her items were moved out—freeing up valuable square footage for us.

Sherry and I approached the cleanup with a straightforward system. Every item was sorted into one of three piles: trash/recycle, sell/donate, and keep. Over the course of a few weekends we made multiple trips to the recycling center, hosted a large yard sale to sell things we no longer wanted, and arranged for furniture pickup so the largest items could be removed quickly. This process helped reduce the clutter dramatically and gave us a clearer idea of what organizational solutions would work best.

After the heavy lifting and sorting, the next phase was cleaning and creating zones. We swept and cleared cobwebs, wiped down surfaces, and used a simple shelving solution to consolidate tools, paints, and seasonal items. A $40 plastic shelf from Home Depot made a surprising difference, turning stacks of boxes into an organized vertical system that freed up floor space. The result: a garage that now comfortably accommodates vehicles and provides usable workspace.

We also created simple zones that make sense for our needs: a gardening and outdoor gear area, a DIY and tool corner, a seasonal storage section, and a small project bench at the back. That “bench” in the photo isn’t a seating nook; it’s a spray-painting and finishing station that’s still awaiting a project. Establishing defined zones prevents items from drifting back into the middle of the floor and makes it easier to maintain the clean layout over time.

We still have a few items headed to Goodwill and a handful of things to fine-tune, but the transformation shows that a modest budget and a clear plan go a long way. If you’re tackling garage organization yourself, consider creating distinct zones, investing in vertical shelving, using clear bins for small parts, and labeling everything. Hanging systems and pegboards can free wall space, while overhead racks are a great option for seasonal items you rarely need. Start by sorting: if you haven’t used it in a year, consider whether it really needs to come back inside.

Now that our garage is usable again, we’re excited to try more specialized storage solutions and workshop-friendly organization. If you’ve discovered garage shelving, hanging systems or layout tricks that work exceptionally well, we’d love to hear about them. For now, the space feels restored—functional, tidy, and ready to be used for cars and projects alike.
