Dark Wood Kitchen Island with White Cabinets

We were absolutely amazed by this dramatic kitchen remodel. The transformation is one of those rare before-and-after stories that really demonstrates how thoughtful planning and hard work can completely reinvent a space. Below is the homeowner Gord’s account of the renovation and the result is genuinely impressive.

I wanted to share a quick note about the kitchen renovation we recently finished. The project was extensive: we moved windows and doors, removed interior walls, enclosed the odd railing that connected to the family room, and reconfigured the entire layout. Essentially, we stripped the kitchen down to the studs and rebuilt it from the ground up. We knew relocating electrical and plumbing would add cost, but it was worth it—by reworking the layout we’ve effectively doubled the usable kitchen space.

Much of the labor was DIY; we handled many tasks ourselves and managed to keep the project within budget. It was a major undertaking, but the payoff has been huge. Before, the kitchen felt cramped, awkward, and outdated. By removing the dividing wall, repositioning appliances and fixtures, and maximizing natural light, we created an open, bright kitchen that now serves as the heart of the home. We’re thrilled with how it turned out and spend much more time there than we ever did before. Hope you enjoy the photos—Sincerely, Gord.

The before photo clearly shows a small, cluttered layout with limited counter space and obstructed sightlines. Many kitchens like this suffer from poor workflow, inadequate storage, and little natural light. The renovation focused on correcting those exact issues: opening the plan for better circulation, installing larger windows and smarter lighting, and adding more efficient storage solutions.

In the after images, the difference is striking. The space now feels airy and modern, with a clear focus on usability and style. An expanded footprint, combined with thoughtful appliance placement and a cohesive design palette, creates both a functional cooking area and an inviting gathering spot. The result is a true open-concept kitchen tailored to family life and entertaining.

A few renovation highlights that make this kitchen stand out:

  • Open-plan layout: Removing walls improved sightlines and flow between the kitchen and family room.
  • Increased natural light: Larger or repositioned windows bring in daylight, making the space feel larger and more welcoming.
  • Expanded footprint: Reconfiguring the layout effectively doubled usable kitchen space for cooking and storage.
  • Smart storage and work zones: New cabinetry and island design enhance organization and workflow for meal prep.
  • Budget-conscious execution: Doing much of the work themselves allowed the homeowners to achieve a high-impact result while controlling costs.

This renovation is a great example of how a thoughtful redesign—rather than cosmetic updates—can dramatically improve a home’s functionality and aesthetic appeal. If your kitchen feels too small, poorly laid out, or simply outdated, consider the potential of reconfiguring the space: moving walls, changing window placement, and optimizing utility locations can transform a tired kitchen into a bright, modern hub of daily life.

Thanks to Gord for sharing these images and the renovation story. The result is a beautiful, practical kitchen that clearly enhances family living and entertaining. It’s inspiring to see what careful planning and determined DIY effort can achieve.
