How to Find Closure After a Breakup and Move On

[ad_1]

You probably remember us mentioning the charming “bed & breakfast” house around the corner a few times. We’ve admired it for years—not only for its in-ground pool, tennis court, and picnic area, but also for its storybook exterior and the way it fits so perfectly into the neighborhood. We even caught a photo of it during a snowstorm last year:

When Sherry and I began house hunting this fall, we joked about knocking on the owner’s door and asking if they’d sell. We were half serious—its curb appeal had captured our imagination for a long time. Before we could work up the nerve, however, we found out the house had already been sold privately a few weeks earlier. There had been no “for sale” sign, no open house; it was simply gone. It was frustrating in the moment, but not altogether surprising given how special the place is.

So it felt a little bittersweet when the new owners introduced themselves at our moving sale last month. Bitter because they’d beaten us to it; sweet because they were buying a bunch of patio furniture and rugs from us, and even sweeter because they turned out to be genuinely nice people who invited us over for a tour. Sherry had been teasing that she couldn’t rest until she’d seen the inside, so the invitation couldn’t have come at a better time.

Once inside, the house didn’t match the image we’d built up in our heads. That’s not a knock on it—the place was full of character and had great potential—but seeing the reality removed the mystique and made our own new house feel all the more right. The interior was a true “before” in the best way: lots of makeover opportunities. There was dated floral wallpaper, old blue carpeting, tired light fixtures, and red laminate countertops—classic signs of a home just waiting for a thoughtful update. The new owners were already in motion, painting and stripping wallpaper while we toured; clearly they’re DIY-minded and excited to make it their own.

Hearing their plans and watching them in action reassured us. They have a vision for the place and the energy to execute it, so it will be cared for and improved. That made it easier to accept that this wasn’t the house for us. It lacked the open floor plan and single-level layout we need as our family grows, and maintaining a large lawn, pool, and tennis court would be a huge commitment right now with a six-month-old at home. In short, the fit just wasn’t right for our current needs.

We left the tour feeling relieved rather than disappointed. Seeing the interior gave us closure and allowed us to move on without wondering “what if?” anymore. We also felt happy for the new owners—knowing they share our enthusiasm for the home and already have concrete plans to renovate made it clear the house is in good hands. We’ll always call it “the bed and breakfast,” a nickname that holds fondness rather than regret. That feels much better than labeling it “the one that got away.”

On a lighter note, we recently announced this week’s giveaway winner. If you want to check whether you won, visit the giveaway announcement on our site where the winner is posted. Thanks to everyone who entered and for all the kindness shown during our move—your support has meant a lot during this busy time.
