DIY Paint Makeover for Kids’ Table and Chairs

[ad_1]

When we spotted Jennifer’s adorable customized kids’ table, we had to share her simple DIY makeover. Here’s her letter in her own words, followed by a closer look at the project and why it works so well for families who want a stylish, budget-friendly option.

I recently bought an Ikea table and chair set for my son for $39.99. While I admire the pricier kids’ furniture from Pottery Barn Kids, I couldn’t justify that cost, so I chose a DIY route instead. Here’s what I did: I applied three coats of red glazing paint from Ikea—$4.99 a can, which was enough for all three coats. I also found some old whimsical letter stamps from a previous art project; I originally bought them at Target when they were on clearance for about $5. Using my stashed colored acrylic paints from Michael’s (each color cost less than $1), I stamped the letters across the tabletop in a playful, imperfect pattern to give the piece personality. I figured my two-year-old could start learning the alphabet while playing in style.

To finish, I followed a tip from a blog post and applied a Pour-On High Gloss finish from Michael’s to seal and protect the tabletop and give it a more polished look. The gloss also makes the surface much easier to clean than the original plywood. Total invested: about $63 plus a few days of time and effort. The result is a budget-friendly, one-of-a-kind table and chair set that looks charming and holds up to everyday use. I thought your readers with young children might appreciate the idea. Thanks, and keep up the great blogging! — Jennifer

This small transformation illustrates several useful points for anyone considering a similar project:

  • Cost-effectiveness: With basic supplies and a low-cost Ikea set, you can achieve a high-impact look for a fraction of the price of designer kids’ furniture.
  • Customizability: You can tailor the colors and stamp patterns to match your child’s room, your home décor, or seasonal themes. Swap red for blue, or mix wood tones and painted hues for a different vibe.
  • Practicality: A high-gloss protective finish not only gives the piece a refined appearance but also makes cleanup quick and easy—an important consideration for kids’ furniture.
  • Educational value: Incorporating the alphabet into play surfaces makes learning part of everyday activities in a subtle, enjoyable way.

We love that Jennifer used affordable materials and simple techniques to create something unique. The project is accessible for a weekend or a few evenings and yields a durable, playful piece that kids will enjoy for years. Thanks for sharing the photos and the step-by-step rundown, Jennifer—this is a great, do-able idea for parents and makers alike.

What do you think? Does this DIY makeover seem doable and fun to you? If you try something similar, consider experimenting with different color combinations, stamp styles, or placement to make it truly your own.
