How to Install White Faux Wood Blinds in the Bedroom

[ad_1]

We first brought home a pair of white faux wood blinds when we were decorating the nursery, because creating a darker room seemed like the best way to encourage daytime naps for a little one. Ironically, for years we also wanted to install similar blinds in our own bedroom. The small window above the bed had never been covered, and although the sun doesn’t rise on that side of the house, we still wanted more darkness for better sleep. The other bedroom window had the original plastic roller shade that likely dated back decades — yellowed, stained and generally unattractive.

One useful thing about the old roller shade was that it tucked neatly beneath our white Roman shade from Ikea. That setup gave us both light blockage and privacy when the roller was down, and during the day it stayed hidden under the Roman shade. Still, we wanted to cover the small window above the bed for a darker room at night, and while we were at it we planned to replace that crusty roller shade on the other window.

We ended up choosing custom-cut white faux wood blinds from Home Depot. They offer free trimming to size, which made them an easy fit for our several different window shapes and sizes. The faux wood finish matches our interior trim and provides a clean, cohesive look across rooms.

Before installing the new blinds we removed the old roller shade and temporarily took down the Roman shade so we could swap things around. The replacement process itself was straightforward. Once the new blind was fitted into the frame, it was clear how much cleaner and fresher the window appeared — a simple change that instantly updated the room’s aesthetic.

One detail to note: sometimes custom blinds arrive slightly too long. Extra slats can add unnecessary weight and make raising or lowering the blind more difficult. The manufacturer’s instructions included a quick guide for removing excess slats to achieve a precise fit. Following those steps made the blind lighter and easier to operate while preserving a neat appearance.

After trimming the extra slats, we rehung the Ikea Roman shade. That way, during the day we can pull the faux wood blinds up and hide them behind the Roman shade, and at night we lower the blinds for privacy and a noticeably darker space. The result is both functional and visually tidy: a darkened bedroom for better sleep without a bulky daytime presence.

Installing matching blinds in multiple bedrooms also helps create continuity throughout the house. We now have these faux wood blinds in two of the three bedrooms, which brings a consistent look to our window treatments and contributes to an overall more finished interior.

On the smaller window above the bed we don’t have a Roman shade to hide the blind, but that hasn’t been a problem. When raised, the white blind blends almost seamlessly with the surrounding white molding, making it virtually invisible during the day. That subtle integration keeps the room looking clean while still delivering the light-blocking benefits we wanted.

The improvement in morning darkness has been dramatic — the difference really is night and day. It feels more mature and deliberate than the yellowed roller shade did, and the faux wood material is easier to maintain and looks fresher overall.

If you’re considering window upgrades, faux wood blinds with custom trimming are a practical, affordable solution. They provide improved light control, privacy, and a cohesive look that works well with painted trim and other window dressings.
