Our New Hardwood Floors: Before and After Reveal

[ad_1]

Put a fork in them — they’re done. Well, actually, on second thought, please don’t bring anything sharp or scratchy near the new hardwood floors. After two full days of installation, the floors are officially in and they look fantastic. The difference is striking: the new hardwood immediately brightened this section of the house and, together with the wider doorways, transformed the flow and feel of the space.

The change is one of those renovations that feels both dramatic and natural. Removing dated linoleum and mismatched floor coverings and replacing them with continuous hardwood gave the rooms a cohesive, updated appearance. Instead of four different floors in four different rooms, we now have just two — which simplifies the look and makes the whole area feel larger and more intentionally designed.

Old linoleum covered in construction dust… is now glossy hardwood.

Flooring is one of those home improvements that pays off immediately in both appearance and function. The new hardwood adds warmth, durability, and a timeless aesthetic that will support future décor choices. Because the installers also widened the doorways at the same time, the light moves through the rooms more freely and the whole layout feels more open. Those two changes together — flooring and wider openings — are the kind of coordinated updates that can transform a home without knocking down major walls or doing a full remodel.

4 different foors in 4 different rooms… become only 2.

We still have more to share about the flooring process — the selection, the layout decisions, and a few little installation surprises — but that will have to wait. For now we’re simply enjoying the new wing. After two weeks of living in makeshift bubbles and dealing with demolition dust, it’s a relief to have our furniture back in place and to be able to walk through the space without tiptoeing around work zones. The exception, of course, remains the kitchen, which is still gutted and patiently waiting for its turn in the renovation schedule.

The kitchen project will come, but for the moment it’s nice to step into a room that already feels complete. The hardwood has brought a sense of continuity and polish to the house, and it makes the incomplete kitchen seem like less of an eyesore because the surrounding spaces now read as intentional and finished. Small details like baseboards, transition strips, and carefully chosen stain tones add up to a big visual improvement.

One thing we hadn’t prominently shown yet was how the previously tricky brick doorway turned out. That difficult area was a design challenge, but the fix looks great now — especially when paired with the new floor. The brick retains its character without competing with the fresh, modern hardwood, creating a pleasing contrast between old and new materials.

We’ll post more detailed updates about the floors soon — including the finish we chose, the edge profiles, and tips for protecting hardwood in high-traffic areas. For now, we’re taking extra care: no shoes offloaded with sharp soles, felt pads under heavy furniture, and caution with tools or anything that could scratch the new surface. The simple act of replacing old, worn coverings with continuous hardwood has renewed the space and reminded us how effective a focused flooring update can be for a home remodel.
