We’re excited to share a gorgeous downtown DC home today, a charming Capitol Hill rowhouse owned by Adam and Amber. Meeting them was a delight, and touring their space only amplified our enthusiasm. Their home is a compact ~1000 square feet, yet every inch is thoughtfully designed for both beauty and function.
Stepping inside, you’re greeted by a living area that uses scale and proportion to great effect. A small-scale sofa and a compact dining nook make the space highly usable without feeling crowded. The round dining table can seat six in a pinch, and larger elements—like oversized art and a statement floor lamp—add contrast so the room doesn’t feel overly petite. These bold pieces create visual interest and a chic balance between cozy and sophisticated.
The subtle single step up into the dining area cleverly defines the zones without closing anything off. An airy iron banister keeps sight lines open, allowing the eye to sweep across the living and dining spaces. Details like a mirrored buffet, leggy metallic dining chairs, a glass-based lamp, and a delicate chandelier reinforce the light, spacious vibe.
Amber’s background as an event planner shows in the charming table settings throughout the house. Every nook feels curated and welcoming, with plenty of small styling touches that make the rooms feel warm and intentional.
The couple’s home also demonstrates some smart small-space solutions. For example, an eggplant-colored chest next to the flatscreen TV houses electronics and DVR components so they can be concealed during gatherings. It’s a practical approach for mounting a TV above a fireplace while keeping gear out of sight. Even better: that deep plum cabinet was an affordable Craigslist find, proving that style doesn’t have to come at a premium.
Looking down the stairwell reinforces how efficiently they’ve used the space. The living and dining areas feel open and uncluttered despite the modest footprint, a testament to careful furniture choices and thoughtful layout.
On the second floor, a hallway connects the guest bedroom/office to the master bedroom. We loved the two-tone doors—Amber painted the lower panels the same gray used on the walls (Stonington Gray by Benjamin Moore) to accentuate the six-panel detail. This simple paint technique adds architectural interest with minimal expense and effort.
A bright pop of orange on a hallway chest adds personality. Amber makes brooch bouquets using vintage pins from flea markets and online sources, attaching them to skewers with floral wire and wrapping stems in floral tape. Combined with real blooms, these handmade bouquets are charming accents throughout the home.
The guest bedroom doubles as an office and is painted a bold peacock blue. A pomegranate-colored daybed from CB2 gives the room a lively pairing, and a mix of art, patterned curtains, and printed pillows finishes the space with polished eclecticism.
The bathroom is cheerful and efficient: pops of green and a printed shower curtain are balanced by abundant white, creating a fresh, vibrant feel. The couple left the space largely as it was when they moved in—no major renovations—demonstrating how accessories and color can modernize a room without a big investment.
In the master bedroom, tall ceilings are emphasized by high-hung drapes. Amber plans to DIY a large upholstered headboard to balance the tall window wall. Another clever DIY is the bedroom closet doors: Adam removed horizontally slatted tops and inserted patterned metal radiator sheets for a tailored look that matches the home’s mixed-metal accents.
The kitchen is a work in progress, and Amber has promised to share updates once they tackle it. Adam had just completed a brick patio in the backyard the day before our visit; they still plan to add outdoor furnishings and perhaps a built-in grill area. We look forward to seeing the finished outdoor space.
