It’s about time we highlighted some projects from our prolific, pregnant Twitter friend Jen Woodhouse, who recently relocated from Nashville to the Richmond area. Since arriving in Virginia she’s been on a nesting streak, tackling a number of home projects that are practical, creative, and totally DIY-friendly. We thought readers would enjoy a closer look at several of her recent transformations, all documented in greater detail on her blog The House of Wood. Below is Jen’s own note about what she’s been working on.
Inspired by your excellent Craigslist dresser refinishing post, I took on an old dresser and turned it into a changing table and dresser for our little one. I refinished the piece to match the nursery and made it both durable and pretty enough for everyday use. You can find a full project write-up with supplies, steps, and photos on my blog.
Because I love sharing DIY wins, I also made a tufted headboard and paired it with simple, inexpensive artwork for above the bed. The headboard was a rewarding weekend project that didn’t require professional upholstery skills—just patience and basic tools. For the art, I used affordable materials and creative techniques to get a custom look without breaking the bank. Read more about the art project and follow the headboard step-by-step post for details.
One more small but satisfying project: baby clothing dividers. I ordered blank wardrobe dividers from an online supplier and customized them with cute patterns. I created a printable template, chose coordinating backgrounds, and adjusted the designs digitally before printing them on full-sheet adhesive labels. After trimming and applying the labels to the plastic dividers, I had a neat, organized system for sorting sizes and seasons. It’s a quick project that makes daily life easier and looks adorable in a nursery. You’ll find steps and tips on doing this yourself on my blog.
We’re grateful Jen sent these photos and project summaries. Each piece reflects thoughtful design choices—clever refinishing techniques, a cozy upholstered headboard, and small organizational touches that add up to a well-planned nursery. It’s hard to pick a favorite since each project solves a different need: furniture restoration for longevity, upholstery for comfort and style, and simple organizers for everyday convenience. Which of Jen’s projects catches your eye most? Do you prefer refinished furniture, custom upholstery, or practical storage solutions?
Are any of you in the nesting phase right now? If so, what DIY projects are you tackling? Many readers find that small projects—like painting a dresser, sewing cushion covers, or designing easy artwork—are perfect for preparing a space for a new baby. Others dive into larger undertaking such as building headboards, refinishing heirloom pieces, or creating custom storage systems. If you’ve tried something similar, tell us what worked, what you’d change, and any tips you picked up along the way.
Also worth noting: we recently teamed up with BabyCenter for a weekly post featuring a versatile craft project that suits nurseries and living spaces alike. The project offers an adaptable approach that can be dressed up for a child’s room or tweaked for everyday decor—simple, fun, and practical. You’ll find a clear photo walkthrough and a step-by-step tutorial that makes it easy to recreate.
If you enjoy creative transformations like these, consider trying a small starter project this weekend—a painted drawer front, a new set of printable storage labels, or a thrifted piece refreshed with a fresh finish. Little changes can make a big difference in how a room feels.
Thanks again to Jen for sharing her inspiring projects. We love seeing how DIY ideas evolve from quick online inspiration into finished pieces that are useful, beautiful, and personal. Keep the projects coming—and don’t be shy about sharing your own before-and-after photos and tips!
