DIY Wood and White Dresser Makeover

[ad_1]

Jen sent us a straightforward yet striking dresser makeover that proves you don’t always need white paint to modernize furniture. Instead, she restored the dresser’s natural wood while pairing it with a soft painted base for an attractive two-tone effect. Below is Jen’s account of the project and the choices she made.

I recently discovered this site and I love it! I especially enjoy the reader redesigns, so I wanted to share a small project with you and the community. This dresser was a hand-me-down from a generous neighbor. My partner and I are preparing for an adoption, and since everyone warns that you’ll have little time once the baby arrives, I decided to tackle a few projects in advance.

For the makeover, my goal was to expose the wood on the top. Several layers of paint were hiding beneath, so I started with chemical paint stripper but only made limited progress. I eventually switched to a belt sander, which made a huge difference—although my shoulders got a workout holding it steady. I also bought new hardware and paint from Home Depot. The base color is a soft celery shade: Behr Premium Plus 380F-4 Ground Ginger. The stain for the top and drawer fronts is Minwax Golden Oak. The small giraffe accents were repainted with Behr Premium Plus S-G-360 Bright Star. Thanks for taking the time to look! — Jen

The restored wood finish is stunning and shows how much a careful sanding and quality stain can elevate a piece. Jen’s decision to reveal the wood grain on the top and front panels brings warmth and character, while the painted base provides contrast and a contemporary feel. This two-tone approach is a popular furniture restoration technique because it balances the original charm of the wood with an updated color palette that suits modern interiors.

A few practical lessons from Jen’s project that other DIYers can apply:
– When a piece has multiple paint layers, a chemical stripper can help, but power tools like a belt sander are often necessary to reach raw wood efficiently.
– Choose a stain that complements your paint color. The warm honey tones of Minwax Golden Oak pair nicely with soft green or celery hues for a harmonious look.
– Replace hardware to complete the transformation. New knobs or pulls can modernize the silhouette and tie the two-tone treatment together.
– Small painted accents—like Jen’s giraffes—can add personality and reinforce the color scheme without overwhelming the piece.

Beyond technique, this makeover also shows how thoughtful refinishing can prepare furniture for a new life in a nursery or family room. Restoring original wood surfaces conserves the furniture’s history and adds textural depth, while repainting the body allows you to coordinate the dresser with the room’s palette. The result is a functional, attractive piece that feels both fresh and timeless.

We’re thrilled Jen shared her project. It’s a reminder that DIY furniture restoration can be both practical and rewarding—especially when you’re working ahead for major life changes like expanding your family. If you appreciate two-tone furniture makeovers, consider trying this approach: strip or sand the top to reveal the wood, select a complementary stain, and finish the base in a soft, modern paint color. The combination creates a balanced, custom look that breathes new life into an old piece.

Thanks again to Jen for the before-and-after inspiration. Her work is proof that patience, the right tools, and a clear vision can transform a hand-me-down dresser into a standout piece for any home.
