When a Home Renovation Harms Resale Value

[ad_1]

This week we’re discussing when it makes sense to undo a personal renovation or decor choice that might discourage potential buyers—and when it’s better to leave your personal touches in place. We’ll also look at changing store return practices. Being able to return decor that doesn’t work out is a valuable safety net, but some retailers are tightening their policies and tracking return activity more closely than before. We’ll explain what’s happening behind the scenes and share practical tips for DIYers to avoid getting flagged. Plus, we recap a recent blogging conference in Austin, share a small but meaningful realization about something you sleep on, and Sherry receives a surprise birthday message that absolutely made her day.

What’s New

House covered in snow as we drove to the airport

  • Above is a photo of our house quickly being dusted with snow as we drove to the airport for the Austin conference a few weeks ago.

Group photo at the blogging conference

  • We were deeply focused on the sessions and didn’t take many photos, but here’s a group shot we grabbed on our way out. From left to right: Jeremy and Katie from Bower Power, us, Amanda and Corey from Love & Renovations, and Julia and Chris from Chris Loves Julia.
  • One of the speakers was Randi Zuckerberg, and we recommend her children’s book Dot, which explores kids and technology and has a thoughtful message. Her talk offered some great perspective on connection in a digital world.
  • We also had an unexpectedly luxurious Uber for dinner that evening—a Tesla—so we snapped a photo of the birthday girl climbing in. It was a bit surreal and worth the laugh.

  • We filmed a short moment showing the Tesla doors in action and the group’s surprised reaction when we realized that was our Uber. The huge dashboard screen caught everyone’s attention.

Can We Just Talk About?

  • Retailers are increasingly using return data to flag abuse. This is part of a broader trend where some companies monitor return patterns and limit or deny returns from accounts they consider problematic. For shoppers who rely on generous return windows to try decor or returns-after-styling, this shift matters.
  • Because return policies can shape buying confidence—especially for online furniture and decor purchases—we discussed how to use them wisely and how to document items so you can return them if needed without inadvertently triggering retailer fraud detection.

Listener Question

  • One listener asked about a house with a garage turned into a theater. That home appeared in our roundup of properties we considered before buying our current house, labeled “The Garage Theater House.”
  • Sherry is putting together a full staging post with photo examples, but here’s a preview: a dining-room-turned-office-turned-homework-room that was styled a certain way for photography, then simplified for selling. The changes were small—removing a few pieces of art and some baskets—rather than big renovations. Thoughtful editing goes a long way.

Styled homework room before and simplified staging

  • In another example, moving an island back to the center of a kitchen helped show the room’s flow more effectively during staging. Sometimes a small furniture adjustment highlights the space and feels more universal to buyers.

  • For those who remember our last house, here’s the carport after we added a pergola to dress it up. We called it the “cargola.” We chose not to enclose it into a garage because we didn’t want to lose daylight in adjacent rooms; the current owners kept it as a carport as well.

We’re Digging

Mail order boxspring in pieces before assembly

  • We ordered a mail-order boxspring a while back for a guest room and liked the convenience. The original wooden-style model we photographed is no longer available, but we later switched to a metal foundation that was cheaper, simpler to assemble, and very supportive. If you’re moving from platform beds to traditional frames, a compact, online-ordered foundation can be an excellent solution.
  • Assembly is straightforward: unfold the frame, secure basic hardware, and zip the cover on. It’s an easy upgrade if you’re used to bulky boxsprings or complicated deliveries.

  • On a lighter note, Sherry received a personalized birthday message from a reality TV personality via a celebrity messaging service. The surprise was authentic joy—she still squeals when she watches it—and it’s a reminder that small, memorable moments create great stories.
