Board and Batten Entryway Wall with Hooks

[ad_1]

We never tire of seeing smart, stylish solutions like the one Sada and her husband Reagan shared with us. They transformed an otherwise empty wall in their entry into a practical coat area and an attractive display for artwork and personal keepsakes. The result is both functional and visually appealing—the art they chose feels meaningful and joyful, and the arrangement is charming and well-balanced. Below is their note to us:

My husband and I recently updated our entryway. Given our house layout, we knew we couldn’t fit a full mudroom, but we did have a large blank wall right next to the front door.

We made the most of it and created a board-and-batten feature. Here’s the before-and-after of our version of a mudroom.

The space is practical, and it adds a much-needed pop of color.

We’re still working on improving the lighting (both the fixture and the fact that the area doesn’t get much natural light). Even so, I love how much cheerier the entry feels now—I catch myself just staring at it sometimes!

I love your blog and would be over the moon if this were featured. Have a great night! – Sada

The board-and-batten trim does an excellent job anchoring the space, but what really stands out is Sada and Reagan’s art display. They mixed sentimental pieces—like engagement photos—with whimsical, real objects from their photo shoot, such as vintage soda bottles, which give the wall personality and a playful touch. The arrangement feels intentional without being fussy, balancing framed prints and three-dimensional items so the whole composition reads as curated and warm.

A few standout elements make this entryway especially effective. The bold accent color behind the boards adds energy and makes the hooks and hardware pop. Dark metal hooks bring contrast and durability, while accessible low hooks keep the area functional for everyday coats and bags. The art selection—sweet prints like “Love” and “Always Radiate Sunshine”—reinforces a welcoming tone. Small, meaningful pieces mixed with larger statement items create depth and visual interest.

This makeover is a great example of how to create a small, no-fuss mudroom alternative that’s both stylish and practical. If you’re working with a narrow entry or limited space, consider these ideas:

  • Install board-and-batten or wainscoting to give the wall architectural interest and a finished look.
  • Choose a lively paint color for the inset area to add warmth without overwhelming the room.
  • Mix framed art with personal objects or mementos to make the space feel lived-in and unique.
  • Use dark, sturdy hooks for function and contrast—arrange them at different heights for coats, bags, and kids’ items.
  • Layer a mirror or small shelf to increase utility and reflect light in darker entries.

We’re fans of the way Sada and Reagan blended form and function. The area feels thoughtfully designed, brightens their home, and serves real everyday needs without requiring a full renovation. Whether you’re aiming for a quick refresh or a more complete entry update, this approach shows how small investments—trim, paint, hardware, and a little curating—can create a welcoming, organized entryway.
