How to Apply a Tone-on-Tone Wall Stencil

We believe a fresh coat of paint can dramatically change a room, and this bedroom transformation proves it. The designer behind this makeover, Sunny, has written two books on painting and redecorating and is sharing her approach here. Below she explains the process and choices that turned a child’s bedroom into a relaxed, age-appropriate retreat for a 13-year-old named Lily.

I’m excited to share this bedroom makeover. I was asked to update the space for Lily, a 13-year-old, taking it from a little girl’s room to something she can enjoy throughout high school and beyond. Lily was away at camp while we completed the project, and she’ll return next week to find her refreshed room as a surprise.

For color, I used Benjamin Moore’s Morning Glory on both the walls and the ceiling. The wall paint is a slightly stronger mix (1/2 formula) and the ceiling uses a lighter version (1/4 formula), which keeps the room cohesive while adding subtle depth overhead. To add texture without overwhelming the space, I created a stencil pattern in three sizes and applied it in a soft white to create a subtle, wallpaper-like effect. The pattern was inspired by the blue Serena & Lily bedding we found on sale online, and it helps tie the whole palette together.

We chose a light blue because it’s calming; that was important since we wanted Lily’s room to be a restful spot. The white stencil keeps the walls from feeling too plain but remains delicate enough to avoid overpowering the room. To add visual interest, I alternated the placement of the stencils: the larger motif was applied upside down and smaller ones right side up, creating a layered, dimensional look that reads as intentional and modern.

Because Lily has frequent sleepovers, we planned for two beds. We used Pottery Barn headboards with removable white slipcovers, and had them monogrammed for a playful, personalized touch. The monogramming was kept large and cheerful to maintain a casual, youthful vibe rather than something too formal. To make the windows feel larger and to give the ceiling height emphasis, we mounted the Roman shades at ceiling level. That simple adjustment makes the room feel airier and more expansive.

The entire project was straightforward, focused on paint, pattern, and a few strategic furnishings, but the impact is significant. Working with thoughtful color choices, subtle stenciling, and a few layout tweaks, we created a space that feels fresh, calming, and appropriate for a teenager without losing warmth or personality.

We’re thrilled with how the room turned out and can’t wait for Lily to see her updated space. This makeover is a good example of how a limited budget and a clear design direction—centered on paint, pattern, and proportion—can yield a professional, long-lasting result. Small details like monogrammed slipcovers, ceiling-mounted shades, and a restrained stencil pattern make the room feel curated without being overdone.

If you’re considering a similar update, focus on three main areas: color harmony, texture or pattern for visual interest, and practical layout changes that improve the room’s flow and perceived size. A softened, cohesive palette keeps the space soothing, while selective patterning provides personality. Finally, small alterations—raising window treatments, choosing versatile bedding, or adding a second bed—can dramatically increase functionality for growing families.

Sunny’s approach showcases how paint can be the starting point for a thoughtful redesign that balances style with comfort and longevity. The result: a serene, stylish “big girl” room that still feels youthful and welcoming.
