How to Refinish a Vintage Wooden Highchair

[ad_1]

This simple highchair makeover is one of those small projects that delivers a huge smile. If you enjoy quick, satisfying furniture refreshes, this bright-painted wooden highchair will likely inspire you to tackle something similar.

I inherited this old wooden highchair from my mom; it had been tucked away in storage for years and carried the usual signs of age—paint splatters, a musty scent, and a hint of smoke. I finally decided it was time for an update now that our toddler Clara is big enough to use it without a lap belt. The transformation was quick, creative, and perfectly suited for everyday family life.

I considered several refinishing options before choosing a direction:

  • Sanding and staining to showcase the wood grain
  • Spraying it white or black for a classic, neutral look
  • Going bold with colors like turquoise, navy, lime, yellow, or orange-red

To help decide, I thought about where the chair would be used most often: the dining room table, the kitchen peninsula, and the living room table. The best finish needed to complement those spaces, and we settled on a bright, happy yellow that ties in with other accents around the house.

  • Our front door is also yellow, and the dining room looks great when that pop of color shows through.
  • We have cheerful yellow accessories in the kitchen that work nicely against neutral tones.
  • A few yellow decorative pieces in the living room felt playful and welcoming.

With the color chosen, I prepped for spray painting. Because the chair is very old and showed paint splatters that could be lead-based, I avoided sanding to prevent disturbing any possible lead paint. Instead, I painted directly over the surface using a spray primer applied in very thin, even mists, keeping the can about 8–12 inches away and moving continuously to prevent drips. I applied three light coats of primer for good adhesion and coverage.

For the primer and the base I used a spray paint with primer built in, which performed well as an undercoat for the bright color. Once the white primer layer was fully dry, I applied several thin coats of Sun Yellow spray paint, aiming for consistent, even layers to avoid runs and to build up solid coverage without losing the crisp finish.

After painting, I left the chair outside on two consecutive sunny days to cure, bringing it into the sunroom overnight to protect it from dew or unexpected weather. After the initial cure, I let it air out in the sunroom for another 48 hours with windows open so any lingering spray-paint smell could dissipate. Allowing paint to fully cure before use is important, especially when the item will get hands-on, rough daily use from children.

When the paint felt hard and glossy, the chair was ready. Gloss paint adds a durable, wipeable finish that resists everyday messes and has a bright sheen that reflects light beautifully. It does show imperfections more readily, so applying thin, even coats and addressing any drips between layers will help achieve the smoothest result.

Introducing the refreshed chair to Clara was a delight. She noticed it right away and climbed in with a little help. Her immediate excitement and sense of ownership were priceless—singing, smiling, and clearly enjoying being a “big girl” in her own chair. Watching her reaction proved that a small project can bring a lot of joy to family life.

Detail shots of the chair show the glossy finish and the even coverage of the yellow paint. The finish is both attractive and practical: easy to wipe clean and sturdy enough to handle typical kid wear and tear. The chair’s new color also reopened a family story—my mom loved seeing the chair revived and thought yellow was a perfect, gender-neutral choice that will work for future children as well.

Beyond the aesthetic improvement, this makeover also freed up space in our playroom by moving the project off the to-do list. Hand-me-down pieces that are updated with fresh color and care gain new life and continue to be useful across generations, which makes the effort especially rewarding.

If you’re thinking about a similar chair makeover, remember these tips: skip sanding if you suspect old lead paint, use a quality primer or paint-with-primer spray, apply thin and even coats, allow adequate curing time outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, and choose a finish that balances durability with the look you want. Small projects like this are fast, cost-effective, and can make everyday moments feel special.

Have you tackled an overdue refresh recently? Whether it’s a chair repaint or a quick spray-paint spree, these simple updates deliver big satisfaction—and a bright yellow highchair is a charming reminder that a little color goes a long way.
