How to Hang an Asymmetrical Gallery Wall That Looks Balanced

We finally filled that blank wall in our guest bedroom with a small gallery of frames, anchored by a few well-placed nails. The original arrangement looked great and added instant personality to the room:

Even after the first round of frames was up, we both felt the space wanted a little more. So we made a quick run to Target and picked up a few additional frames to expand the arrangement. The goal was to build on the existing “history” theme created by the vintage Richmond map and bring in meaningful family photos that add warmth and narrative to the wall.

Back home, Sherry jumped right into arranging the new pieces. Within minutes she had four more frames artfully placed alongside the originals. She later confessed that she’d experimented with a few trial-and-error nail holes behind the frames while getting the layout just right—small sacrifices for a balanced composition. The updated grouping feels more complete and much more personal than when the wall was sparsely decorated.

The new additions are all aligned with that nostalgic, history-focused look. We decided to use old family photos to complement the map and to create a visual story for guests who stay in the room. These aren’t just decoration—they’re conversation starters and tiny time capsules that connect the space to our past.

Two of the frames are 8×10 portraits from our baby days—both of us mid-expression, mouths wide open in classic baby fashion. Another 5×7 holds a photo of my mother walking me down the beach when I was a chunky little kid; that photo captures a small, tender moment of family life. The other 5×7 features a striking black-and-white portrait of Sherry’s dad from 1964, which adds a cool, timeless touch to the gallery.

We like how the mix of sizes and tones—color baby photos paired with a vintage black-and-white portrait—creates visual interest without feeling cluttered. The frames are close enough to feel cohesive as a single installation, yet spaced so each image still has its own presence. That balance helps the wall read as intentional rather than randomly decorated.

Beyond aesthetics, this wall is becoming a subtle way to share pieces of our story with visitors. A guest who notices the Richmond map and then sees the family photos might ask about the connections, which leads to stories about where we came from and what those images mean to us. In that way, the gallery turns a simple blank wall into a welcoming, personal feature of the home.

We’re already dreaming about future additions. The wall is far from full, and we’re both excited to keep collecting photos, maps, and other small mementos to gradually fill the space. It’s a flexible project that evolves over time, letting us add new memories and design touches as they arrive.

For now, the guest bedroom feels cozier and more complete, and we’re glad we took the extra trip to pick up a few more frames. Expect more updates as this gallery grows and the wall becomes a richer reflection of family history and personal style.
