Budget-Friendly Philadelphia Apartment Makeover – Objectales

[ad_1]

When John’s younger sister Carrie asked us to transform her new apartment in Philadelphia on a tight budget, we were excited to help. With a little thoughtful rearranging and a few well-chosen accessories, a big white box of a room was quickly transformed into a bright, functional, and stylish living space. Here’s how we completed a four-hour, $200 makeover that updated her apartment without breaking the bank.

Carrie’s open-plan room serves as the living area, dining area, and includes a kitchen along one wall, so the space needed to be flexible, practical, and visually cohesive. At 22, Carrie prefers a fresh, youthful look with pops of color, so we introduced pattern, texture, and accent hues that bring personality to the otherwise neutral canvas. One of the first challenges was the furniture arrangement. When we arrived, the sofa had been angled toward the TV, which left the back of the couch facing the entrance and made the room feel closed off:

After a quick brainstorming session (and with John’s help extending the cable hookup across the room using a $6 extension cord), we repositioned the sofa so it sits centered underneath Carrie’s large picture windows. This simple change opened the entryway, improved sightlines, and made the seating area feel balanced and welcoming rather than blocked by the back of a couch:

With the major layout solved, we inventoried the finishing touches that would pull the room together: curtains to frame the windows, baskets for hidden storage, a multi-purpose ottoman, and wall art for the dining area. Armed with a $200 budget, we headed to Ikea and returned a few hours later with everything on the list—plus a little change to spare. No time for a celebration: we jumped into hanging the curtains and styling the space immediately.

We installed a pair of floor-length patterned curtains for $14.99 to frame the city view and maintain an airy feel. The subtle green and black stripes add texture and color without overwhelming the room, and they echo the small floral accents Carrie already had in teardrop vases on the wall between the windows. The new window treatment instantly made the room feel more polished and intentional.

For the dining nook we added a small, budget-friendly cow print that pulls the curtain colors into the eating area, then framed it in a simple black Ribba frame. Clearing clutter from the dining surface and the kitchen counters created more usable space and made the entire open-plan area feel neater and more functional.

Storage and small details were important to the overall result. We added two rattan baskets that slide under side tables for out-of-sight storage and chose an ottoman with hidden storage to keep remote controls, throws, or extra pillows organized. Even the snacks and reading material were coordinated to complement the playful color palette, which helped the room read as cohesive and thoughtfully styled.
