Transform Your Basement with Smart Storage Solutions

[ad_1]

Thanks to the generous support of the folks at True Value, our basement is finally dry, usable, and ready for storage. We transformed what used to be a damp, bug-prone room into a waterproofed space that functions well for household storage. If you want the full story on the prep and waterproofing, we documented the process in earlier posts that detail each step of the conversion.

After a productive Ikea run this weekend, we returned with almost everything from the simple mood board we put together: affordable, practical pieces that maximize storage and keep the space looking tidy. Here’s what we picked up and how it factored into the plan:

  1. Expedit shelf (part of the Expedit Workstation) — $120
  2. Torsby table (already owned) — free in our tally
  3. Woven baskets — about $17 each
  4. Two Aneboda wardrobes — roughly $100 each
  5. White storage boxes — $12 for a pair
  6. Green storage boxes — $12 for a pair
  7. Expedit desk (included in the Expedit Workstation listed above)

With those pieces in place, the room really began to take shape. We sketched a simple floor plan ahead of time to determine the best layout, focusing on placement that would deliver the most function for the least money. Planning the arrangement first helped us decide which items would work where and how to keep circulation open while maximizing concealed storage.

There are still several projects left on the list: installing a new light fixture, rewrapping the water heater, building a screen to hide the water heater once it’s rewrapped, refinishing or addressing the windows, and setting up a DIY dehumidifier solution. But the additions of two Aneboda wardrobes, an Expedit Workstation and a few inexpensive accessories made an immediate impact. We added some faux plants for greenery and storage boxes to keep smaller items tucked away, plus the Torsby table and a few wooden chairs we already owned to provide a functional surface and seating.

We also moved our bikes into the space, which frees up room elsewhere in the house, and we’re already planning ways to enhance the back wall for a more finished look. The built-in cabinet below still needs a coat of paint, so ignore the current dingy finish — that’s on the to-do list.

All told, the Ikea furniture cost us about $350, and the waterproofing and prep supplies totaled around $400, much of which was made possible with help from True Value. That combination of investing in practical, affordable pieces and taking the time to properly prepare and protect the space is what turned a scary cinder-block basement into an organized, furniture-ready room.

We haven’t shown the insides of the wardrobes yet because we still need to organize them. We’re excited about using sealed plastic bins to stack seasonal decor, sporting equipment, and other items we prefer to keep out of sight. Next up: more storage bins, better lighting, some art to warm up the space, and a solution for disguising that unattractive water heater.

Have you ever dealt with an odd or unsightly feature in your home — a fuse box, propane tank, stubborn carpet stain, damaged hardwood, strange trap door, or unattractive outlet? We’d love to hear how you concealed or transformed those problem areas. Sharing ideas helps everyone discover new, practical ways to improve living spaces on a budget.

Psst — For inspiration, we’ve shown other ways we’ve hidden house eyesores in the past, like camouflaging a fuse box in the den, disguising an exterior propane tank, and covering unattractive plugs and outlets near the laundry area. With any luck, we’ll make that water heater vanish, too.
