Meet Our New French Door: A Fresh Home Upgrade

Our French Door Upgrade: From Rotten Slider to Fresh, Functional Entry

Yesterday we posted a short piece about when to DIY and when to hire out, using our old sliding doors as the example. They were stuck, the screen was broken, the lock barely worked, and the frame was rotting. We finally decided to replace them with a set of matching French doors to create a more cohesive look that ties into the door in our laundry room.

Once the new doors were installed we still needed to paint the trim and both sides of the doors. They arrived primed but unpainted, so we taped off the trim and hardware. John rolled on Benjamin Moore Advance in Decorator’s White with a small foam roller while I followed with a short-handled brush to get into grooves, corners, and trim that the roller couldn’t reach. We completed the entire interior side in one afternoon with three thin, even coats and planned to paint the exterior side the next day.

The transformation is striking. The doors instantly changed the feel of the hallway and the adjoining rooms. Before, the old slider made the entrance feel cramped and tired; now the double doors bring a sense of light and openness. One of the biggest surprises was how the doors behave when opened: they don’t block the hallway or hinder traffic. We had worried that the left door would obstruct the passage when both were open, but in practice they fold back neatly and leave the walkway clear. That practical improvement alone made the upgrade worthwhile.

We also upgraded the hardware to an oil-rubbed bronze finish, which adds subtle visual weight and sophistication. The new hardware fits the updated look without feeling fussy or overdone—elegant but not flashy.

Functionally, we’ll likely use the right-hand door most of the time as a single access point, which is convenient for quick trips outside. But there’s a satisfying thrill in throwing both doors open when we want more airflow or easier access for hosting. The old slider had a broken screen, so we hadn’t used a screen regularly in the nearly two years we’ve lived here. If we decide we want a screen later, there’s an add-on option available from the retailer.

Replacing the old slider with French doors did more than just improve the doorway itself. It elevated the appearance of the entire area: the new doors make surrounding elements look refreshed by contrast. Even our scratched parquet floor feels more intentional next to the clean lines and fresh paint of the new doors. Small updates like this can change how you perceive the whole space, making minor flaws seem less noticeable.

There are still a few finishing touches left: painting the exterior side of the doors, staining and sealing the deck, finding a way to hide the ugly electric meter, and adding string lights overhead to create an inviting atmosphere. Once those details are in place, the alley outside will feel almost unrecognizable compared to how it looked before.

This project reinforced that some investments—especially visible ones like doors—have an outsized impact on a home’s aesthetic and function. A relatively quick, focused upgrade can elevate the entire area and make future improvements feel more intentional.

What upgrades have you made that changed the way a room feels? Sometimes fixing one element makes everything else look better by comparison. For us, new doors had that exact effect: practical, elegant, and surprisingly transformative.
