Comments Flood In After Viral Post

Who would have thought a half-formed banquette idea would spark such a buzz? More than 800 comments in just a few hours—insane, and incredibly fun to read. We appreciate every suggestion and promise to keep you updated as the plan evolves. There are lots of details to consider and nothing is final, so the design will likely change as we go. You can count on us to share the ups and downs as we make decisions.

While I should be painting the office cabinets (yet here I am, distracted by the blog), a reader named Amber sent in a gorgeous rendering she created in Photoshop, and I had to share it. Her mockup helps make the idea feel more real and gives us a starting point for imagining layout and finishes.

Seeing Amber’s visualization makes it easier to picture how the banquette might work in the space. Of course, many details will change—the countertop color, the table shape and finish, light placement, flooring, cabinet colors, and whether the back of the banquette has open shelving or closed cabinetry. Nothing shown in the rendering is final, but it’s a useful tool for envisioning the flow and scale.

One issue people struggled to visualize before seeing the rendering was how much of the room the banquette would actually block. It won’t restrict the room more than the previous table did. The banquette seating will be the same height as standard table seating, so people seated there will have essentially the same sightlines across the room. The countertop behind the banquette will be about the same height as the rest of the base cabinets, so the arrangement shouldn’t feel closed off. Everyone can see over base cabinets—well, mostly everyone (Clara and Burger might be exceptions).

Now that the layout is clearer, we’re considering adding two small stools at the back of the banquette so the countertop adjacent to the kitchen can double as casual seating. It could be a handy spot for a quick breakfast or a place to chat while meals are prepared. On the other hand, that surface could be valuable prep space when we’re cooking, or a staging area for appetizers when entertaining. Right now it’s all hypothetical brainstorming, but it’s fun to imagine the possibilities. Thanks again to everyone who chimed in earlier—your ideas are helping shape our choices.

Some readers suggested orienting seating toward the kitchen work area rather than facing the hallway and fireplace. We value that point, but we prefer the counter to sit closest to the work zone, and we also appreciate that the best views in the room are the framed wall and the fireplace. Personally, I like not having to look at a sink full of dishes while relaxing in the nook. Because the fireplace sits in the corner, flipping the L-shaped banquette to face the prep area would disrupt the visual balance the current orientation provides. A flipped layout would make the fireplace look awkward in the space rather than complementary.

Thanks for indulging our running commentary. I need to get back to painting office cabinetry—we just started using Benjamin Moore Advance paint and are eager to see how it performs on the new doors and drawers. I’ll share the full painting process, colors, and photos once the coats are dry and everything looks presentable, likely early next week if all goes smoothly. Are any of you painting cabinets right now, or dreaming about cozy banquettes? I’d love to hear how your projects are going.

Psst—this week’s giveaway winners were announced. Check our site to see if your name is on the list.
