Why We Chose Cork Flooring for Our Home

[ad_1]

Why did we start a flooring project right before a trip? Because we love tackling projects and the idea of coming home to a partly finished floor felt oddly satisfying. It might sound a little crazy, but getting a head start on our cork flooring before we left for Portland and Hawaii turned out to be a smart move. Finishing the floor after a vacation gave us something immediate and tangible to look forward to, and for DIY enthusiasts, that anticipation is part of the fun.

We chose snap-and-lock cork flooring for several reasons. First, the planks float over the existing surface and simply snap together, which makes installation faster and cleaner than traditional glue-down options. Second, the cork feels soft and cushioned underfoot, an instant upgrade from our old vinyl. Because our old vinyl included an asbestos liner, we followed safety recommendations and did not remove it. Instead, we installed the cork as a floating floor over the existing vinyl, which allowed us to avoid disturbing any hazardous materials while still getting a much better surface.

The floating installation method has practical benefits for homeowners who need flexibility. The snap-and-lock system means the floor can be laid in stages without causing a big disruption. Our house sitters were comfortable walking over the new cork and the visible underlayment while we were away. There are no messy or smelly adhesives to deal with, so partial installation didn’t interfere with anyone’s comfort or routines. That ease of use is one reason floating cork floors are so appealing for renovation projects where occupancy continues during work.

Beyond convenience, cork brings practical performance benefits. It compresses slightly under pressure, so it provides a softer, quieter surface than hard tile or laminate, which is especially nice in living areas and kitchens. Cork is also a natural material with insulating properties, which can help maintain warmth underfoot and improve acoustic comfort inside the home. For anyone considering a flooring upgrade, cork is worth investigating for its combination of comfort, style, and eco-friendly credentials.

We’ve been enjoying the color and texture of the new mocha-toned cork. The warm, rich hue adds a cozy feel to our rooms and coordinates well with a range of décor styles. Because the planks click into place, the overall look is tidy and uniform, and we haven’t had any trouble matching seams or keeping patterns consistent. Small details like underlayment peeking out at the edges are only temporary; once the final sections are in place and the trim is installed, the transformation will look seamless.

We’ll share a full, detailed update when we return to the DIY routine next week. At that point we’ll cover step-by-step installation notes, the tools we used, how we handled transitions and thresholds, and any tips for working safely around old vinyl that may contain hazardous materials. If you have specific questions about the cork flooring, installation, or safety precautions, please save them for our next post on Monday. We plan to answer everything in that morning update so readers can follow along with clear instructions and helpful photos.

For now, we’re relaxing and enjoying the trip. It’s a nice break to soak up some scenery and recharge before finishing the last few rows of flooring. In the meantime, Clara has been happily entertained by her fish — a small, cheerful distraction while we’re away. She really does love her fishies.

Psst — We announced this week’s giveaway winner. Check the announcement to see if it’s you.
