14 New Interior Door Knobs to Update Your Home

[ad_1]

Right before we installed the hardwood floors upstairs, we sprayed all of the blue trim and doors. The painting made a dramatic difference, but many of the doors were still without knobs—some of the original hardware was rusted, pitted, or simply jammed and no longer turned or locked. Replacing knobs felt like the sensible next step: the doors themselves are in great shape and look fresh with glossy white paint, so swapping hardware is a much more budget-friendly option than replacing entire doors.

We wanted knobs that felt classic and appropriate for the house, but also a little special—something you don’t see every day. We shopped around and considered a wide variety of styles, finishes, and price points. Below are the main contenders we weighed during our decision process:

  1. A white porcelain knob with a pewter stem, an elegant choice that feels timeless and slightly vintage in character.
  2. A darker-toned antique-style knob, with a rich patina that would add warmth and a sense of age to the new trim.
  3. A chrome knob paired with a square backplate for a slightly modern, geometric look.
  4. An oil-rubbed bronze knob mounted on a rectangular backplate—this introduced extra visual interest and contrast against the white doors.
  5. An oil-rubbed bronze knob accented with crystal, a more glamorous option for those who like a little sparkle.
  6. A plated metallic knob with a polished surface, offering a clean, reflective finish.
  7. A polished chrome egg-shaped knob, classic in shape with a sleek finish.
  8. An oblong oil-rubbed bronze knob, a less common silhouette that felt distinctive.
  9. A simple chrome knob, economical and bright.
  10. A satin nickel egg-shaped knob, soft and understated.
  11. A crystal-and-satin-nickel combination knob for a decorative touch that still reads classic.
  12. A basic oil-rubbed bronze knob, affordable and versatile.
  13. An interestingly shaped satin-nickel knob that offered subtle artistry in its profile.
  14. A dark-toned lever-style knob for rooms where a lever was preferred over a round knob.

It was not an easy decision. Many of the options would have worked well with the new trim and floors, but our final choices came down to what we were most drawn to visually and what fit our budget. Some of the pricier picks could have pushed the cost into the thousands for all of the upstairs doors, so cost definitely helped narrow things down.

For the overall aesthetic we were aiming for—mocha hardwood floors, crisp white trim and doors, and dark knobs for contrast—we found that knobs with rectangular backplates added just the right amount of interest without feeling fussy. We were especially inspired by photos showing a dark knob centered on a narrow rectangular plate: the silhouette reads clean and tailored while still offering visual depth against the white door.

In the end, we selected a mid-priced oil-rubbed bronze knob with a rectangular plate for the four bedrooms. For the two bathrooms we chose a simpler, more economical option in the same finish so everything would feel cohesive from room to room. Closets received even cheaper or dummy versions of the same style so the look stayed consistent while keeping costs down.

Before completing the order we searched for a coupon code and found a discount that saved us 10% and offered free shipping, which was a welcome bonus and reduced the overall expense.

We expect the new knobs to complete the upstairs refresh, contributing to a fresh-yet-classic feeling that complements the new hardwood floors and painted doors. The dark hinges are already installed, so once the doorknobs arrive, the transition will feel finished.

It’s striking how quickly the upstairs changed. A few weeks ago the hallway looked completely different—old carpet and blue trim felt like they were part of the house forever, and yet after a few updates they already feel like distant memories. That’s part of why I cherish before photos: they preserve the starting point so you can always look back and appreciate how far a space has come.
