Day 7 Survival 101: Nether Prep, Portal Safety, and Survival Kit Guide

Day 7 is the “gateway day.”

You’re no longer just building a base and mining nearby caves—you’re about to open a door into the Nether, where everything is faster, scarier, and way more profitable. Done right, the Nether gives you:

  • Blaze rods (brewing + progression)
  • Nether wart (potions)
  • Quartz (XP + redstone builds)
  • Fast travel later (Nether highways)

But Day 7 is not “jump in and hope.” It’s a plan: portal safety, spawn control, escape routes, and what to do first.

Day 7 Objectives ✅

  • Secure obsidian and build a portal in a safe location
  • Create a portal room (Overworld + Nether side)
  • Pack a proper Nether survival kit
  • Learn the first 3 “do this immediately” Nether actions
  • Return alive with at least one key resource (gold, quartz, or wart)

1) Nether Reality Check (What Actually Kills You) 😅

Most early Nether deaths are not heroic. They’re dumb and preventable:

  • Lava (falls, flows, surprise ceilings)
  • Getting lost (no landmarks, panic running)
  • Ghasts (knockback into lava/void)
  • Piglins (anger them and you get jumped)
  • Overconfidence (the real final boss)

So the solution is simple: control the environment, don’t rush, and build safety before loot.

2) Obsidian: Fast and Safe Collection 🪣🔥

To build a portal you need 10 obsidian minimum (you can use corners as blocks). The safest early method:

  • Bring a water bucket
  • Find a lava pool (usually deeper underground)
  • Pour water → make obsidian
  • Mine with a diamond pickaxe

Reminder: Iron pickaxe cannot mine obsidian. If you don’t have diamonds yet, Day 7 can still be “prep day” while you finish diamond hunting.

3) Portal Placement: Where You Build Matters 📍

New players slap a portal anywhere and regret it later. Your portal should be:

  • Close to your base (so you actually use it)
  • In a protected room (so mobs don’t surprise you)
  • Not inside wood (fire risk)

Best early location: a stone/cobble “portal room” attached to your base.

4) Build a Portal Room (Overworld Side) 🧱

Basic portal room checklist:

  • Walls: stone/cobble (non-flammable)
  • Lighting: no dark corners
  • Storage chest with emergency supplies
  • Clear path from base to portal (no traps)

Add a sign like “NETHER KIT” so your future self doesn’t forget supplies.

Portal rooms aren’t decoration. They’re your insurance policy.

5) Nether-Side Safety Box (Do This First) ✅

The moment you enter the Nether, your first job is not exploring—it’s securing the spawn.

Build a small “Nether-side portal bunker”:

  • Stone/cobble walls around the portal
  • A roof (ghasts + falls)
  • A door or controlled entrance
  • Torches (for your visibility—Nether lighting doesn’t stop all spawns, but it helps you)

If the Nether spawns you near lava or a cliff, the bunker becomes mandatory.

6) The Nether Survival Kit (Don’t Enter Without This) 🎒

  • Shield 🛡️
  • 1 piece of gold armor (boots are best) 🟨
  • Blocks (3–5 stacks, cheap ones) 🧱
  • Food (minimum 1–2 stacks) 🍗
  • Bow + arrows 🏹
  • Fire Resistance potion (if you have it, huge) 🔥🧪
  • Flint & Steel (portal relight) 🔥
  • Spare pickaxe ⛏️

Gold armor is not optional. Piglins will treat you like lunch without it.

7) First 3 Things to Do in the Nether (Order Matters) 🎯

Step 1: Mark the Portal Coordinates

Write down the Nether coordinates of your portal. Seriously. This saves lives.

Step 2: Pick a “Home Wall” Direction

Create a simple navigation rule, like:

  • Torches always on the right wall when heading away from portal
  • Double-torch means “turn here”

Step 3: Secure a Short Scout Route

Don’t sprint into the distance. Create a short, safe corridor first, then expand.

Nether progression is built like a tunnel system. Not like a random adventure.

8) Piglins, Ghasts, and “How Not to Start a War” 😅

Piglins

  • Wear gold armor
  • Don’t open chests around them
  • Don’t mine gold in front of them unless you’re ready to fight

Ghasts

  • Always keep cover near open areas
  • Use a bow to deal with them
  • Don’t build one-block bridges over lava oceans (ever)

9) What Should You Bring Home on Day 7? (Pick One Goal) ✅

Day 7 isn’t “complete the Nether.” It’s “start the Nether safely.” Pick one realistic target:

  • Quartz for XP (great early)
  • Glowstone for lighting + potions
  • Gold for future piglin bartering
  • Nether wart if you find a fortress early (rare on Day 7)

If you return alive with any of these, Day 7 was a win.

10) Common Day 7 Nether Mistakes (Quick Fixes) 🧯

  • Mistake: Portal built in wood → fire spreads
    Fix: Stone/cobble portal room.
  • Mistake: No flint & steel → stuck when portal breaks
    Fix: Always carry one.
  • Mistake: No blocks → can’t bridge or bunker
    Fix: Bring 3–5 stacks.
  • Mistake: Getting lost
Fix: Torch rules + coordinate note.
  • Mistake: Piglins suddenly attack
Fix: Gold armor + avoid chest/gold mining near them.

Day 7 Checklist ✅

  • [ ] Portal built in a safe Overworld room
  • [ ] Nether-side bunker created around portal
  • [ ] Proper Nether kit packed (gold armor + blocks + shield)
  • [ ] Portal coordinates recorded
  • [ ] Short safe corridor established
  • [ ] Returned alive with at least one Nether resource

Wrap-Up: Day 7 Opens the Whole Game 🔥

Once your Nether entry is safe, everything accelerates: potions, blaze rods, wart farms, quartz XP, and later Nether highways. The key is resisting the urge to rush.
