My birthday arrived early this year with a celebratory weekend trip to Williamsburg last Friday, followed by a steady stream of cards and thoughtful deliveries over the next few days. Today I turn 26, and I finally have a moment to share the highlights of a truly memorable birthday.
To start, my best friend Heather surprised me with the most adorable (and expertly photoshopped) portrait of my little guy, dressed in full birthday regalia. The photo is playful and sweet, and it captures his personality perfectly. It was such a thoughtful and personal gesture that immediately set a joyful tone for the rest of my celebrations.

John, my husband, pulled at my heartstrings with a custom portrait of Burger created by a silhouette artist. The piece is cut from black paper, and it somehow reduces Burger’s layered personality—snuggly, squirmy, squishy, endlessly sweet—into one elegant, minimal profile. Even small details, like his eyelashes, were included, and the result looks stunning on our asymmetrical gallery wall. A one-of-a-kind silhouette portrait like this is a beautiful way to immortalize a pet’s unique features and presence.

Thanks to the new kitchen, John’s parents gifted me a delightful collection of cupcake-themed items. The box included a charming cupcake carrying caddy, jars of pastel sugared sprinkles, and a selection of gourmet cupcake mixes in tempting flavors like vanilla strawberry, poppy lemon, and chocolate caramel. These baking goodies were perfectly paired with a cozy pair of cupcake-patterned pajama pants, making the whole set feel festive and fun. It’s hard to resist the urge to bake right away—and to snack while testing each flavor.

In addition to the baking treats, I received two oversized glass vases—elegant, clear pieces that instantly elevate a room. John’s parents and his sister were so generous, and these vases are already inspiring ideas for seasonal floral arrangements and table styling. Their scale and simplicity make them versatile decor pieces that will work with both fresh blooms and dried arrangements.

The biggest surprise was a new silver iPod nano from John. It was preloaded with photos—some of us, but mostly of Burger—and a couple of Beatles anthologies from his sisters and their partners. Believe it or not, this is my first iPod, so I’m officially joining the white earphone crowd. The nano’s ability to play videos, store pictures, and hold a large music library makes it the perfect companion for my frequent three-mile walks with Burger. I’m looking forward to testing playlists and podcasts on our daily strolls; I only hope he doesn’t mind that I’ll be listening to tunes instead of focusing solely on the sound of his little paws.

Altogether, these gifts and the thoughtful gestures from friends and family made this birthday one of the best I can remember. From handmade and personalized pieces to practical and beautiful home items, every present felt curated with care and affection. The trip to Williamsburg, the cards, and the surprise deliveries combined to create a warm, celebratory week—and I’m grateful for every moment.
In short: a perfect birthday filled with meaningful gifts, great company, and plenty of reasons to smile.
