Budget Bathroom Makeover for Grandma: $170 Renovation

Who’s ready for the big bathroom reveal?

As mentioned in Monday’s post about the bathroom project, most room makeovers follow three clear phases: planning and prep, the larger upgrades, and the finishing touches. Some steps take a long time, and others—like this quick bathroom blitz—happen fast and feel almost immediate.

  1. Prep and planning: brainstorming, choosing a palette, gathering supplies, priming, sanding, and spackling.
  2. Bigger upgrades: painting walls, refinishing or repainting cabinets, installing new flooring, and other structural improvements.
  3. Finishing touches: curtains, hardware, art, and accessories that add personality and polish.

Day Three of our mini renovation focused entirely on those finishing touches. After the prep and the major updates on Days One and Two, this final day was about bringing warmth, color, and meaningful details into Granny’s small bathroom. I even scribbled notes on the back of a paper plate while I worked—creative improvised tools for a tight timeline.

The curtains were an instant impact. Using a discounted designer fabric we scored at a local shop, hem tape, and simple measurements, I made two custom panels in about an hour. I measured a length that would fall a few inches below the window trim, cut two rectangles of fabric allowing extra for hems, and finished the edges with no-sew hem tape. After hemming, the panels had the width and fullness we wanted and were hung with a simple curtain rod and ring clips.

That cheerful fabric set the tone for the room’s color story—emerald, navy, and violet—and inspired the accessories we brought in. Granny already owned many of the accent pieces, which made the room feel familiar and personal: a wooden tulip Papa had carved years ago, a silver tray, and a green vase that fit perfectly into the refreshed space.

We also revisited a seam near the vent and the new flooring that needed a final polish of caulk. A clean caulk line makes a huge visual difference, so we dedicated a little time to smoothing those edges. Caulk may not be glamorous, but it’s absolutely one of the DIY MVPs.

Accessorizing is where a space becomes a home. Fresh flowers from the grocery store in Granny’s own vase, a stack of colorful hardcover books on the toilet tank, and a framed 5 x 7 photo of Granny and Papa placed beside a framed scrap of the curtain fabric created a cohesive, meaningful vignette. Using printed or patterned fabric behind glass is an easy way to add custom art without a big cost.

We updated small hardware, too: a new navy knob on the medicine cabinet and refreshed cabinet hardware helped modernize the look. Simple finishes and a bit of spray paint transformed overlooked pieces into accents that read intentional and tailored.

The sink area shows how small fixes add big results: we removed old caulk, re-caulked, and painted the wall behind the sink. Those relatively simple steps refreshed a tired corner and helped the whole room feel cleaner and newer.

Here’s a snapshot of the to-do list we completed during the three-day makeover:

  • Brainstorm colors and shop for accessories (Day 1)
  • Spackle, sand, and caulk to prep for paint (Day 1)
  • Rebuild and balance cabinets (Day 1)
  • Prime and paint cabinets for an updated look (Day 1 & 2)
  • Paint the entire room, including the ceiling (Day 2)
  • Repair issues such as a rusted duct and dingy sink corner (Day 2)
  • Replace old sheet laminate flooring with vinyl tiles (Day 2)
  • Refresh hardware and accessories (Day 2)
  • Make and hang curtains to add charm (Day 3)
  • Bring in meaningful art and accessories (Day 3)
  • Finalize styling and reveal the space to Granny (Day 3)

The budget for the project was intentionally modest. Paint, tiles, fabric, a curtain rod, a few small hardware items, and some finds from HomeGoods added up to a small investment that delivered big visual returns. Much of the charm came from using items Granny already owned, paired with just a few new, inexpensive pieces that tied the whole palette together.

Seeing Granny’s reaction was the best part. The room felt cheerful, personal, and bright—exactly what we hoped to create. She even happened to be wearing a sweater that matched the new colors, which made the moment feel serendipitous and heartfelt.

Driving home after the reveal, we were still smiling. Small renovations done with care can change how a space feels and how the people who use it feel about their home. Have you ever helped someone update a room on a tight timeline or budget? Giving someone a refreshed space—especially when you can incorporate their personal pieces—creates results that are both beautiful and meaningful.
