Classic Kitchen Design: Granite Island and White Glass Cabinets

[ad_1]

When you look at the photos in this post, it’s clear that Meghan and her husband achieved an impressive transformation. The before-and-after results are striking, but what makes their story especially compelling is the journey behind the renovation. If you don’t scroll straight to the pictures and instead read the narrative as you go, you’ll appreciate the effort, planning, and persistence that produced this dramatic home renovation.

“Like the two of you, my husband and I bought a house that needed work, though in our case we couldn’t reuse much thanks to some frugal prior owners. We decided to gut our kitchen, family room, dining room, and bathroom down to the studs and subfloor when our first child was just 12 weeks old. We both worked full time and DIY’ed everything because my husband is cheap ambitious. There were many late nights and long weekends, and our son learned to sleep through the noise of a nail gun. With a refrigerator in the garage, we had to go outside in the middle of the night for 2 AM feedings. You’d think we’d have learned our lesson, but we’ve since renovated most of the rest of the house while adding two more children. Three boys in under three years while renovating a home DIY-style. Do not try this at home. Here are some before shots, orange paneling and all.

Notice the back and left side walls. Now you see them…

…now you don’t.

We also turned all the doors into windows and the window into a door (because why do anything the easy way?) and had to shut down the heat for a week to move the baseboards around. Of course we did this when it was freezing outside, so our poor son slept bundled up with mittens. But he didn’t seem to mind.

The cabinets, windows, and sliding door (really almost everything in the room) are from Home Depot. The lighting is Restoration Hardware, one of my two splurges (the other was the Ming Green marble backsplash). The toy boxes under the console table are actually Ikea end tables, and most accessories came from HomeGoods and Ikea. Thanks for letting me share!” – Meghan

Reading Meghan’s account, it’s easy to feel both exhausted and impressed. A full-scale DIY renovation is a major undertaking at any life stage, and attempting one with a newborn is especially demanding. Their story highlights several aspects of successful home renovation and kitchen remodel projects that other homeowners might find valuable: careful planning, willingness to live through temporary discomfort, sourcing affordable materials, and prioritizing a few high-impact splurges to elevate the final look.

From an SEO perspective, this renovation demonstrates key elements people search for when planning a remodel: kitchen renovation on a budget, DIY home renovation tips, before-and-after transformations, and family-friendly design solutions. Meghan and her husband relied on accessible retailers for most of the hard finishes—cabinets, windows, and a sliding door—while choosing a few signature pieces for lighting and backsplash to create a polished, intentional aesthetic.

Practical takeaways from this project include the value of incremental progress and the realities of balancing renovation work with family life. They gutted multiple rooms down to the studs and subfloor, which often allows for efficient rewiring, insulation upgrades, and layout improvements. Converting doors to windows and a window to a door shows how rethinking openings can change circulation, light, and the overall feel of a space. And while it meant uncomfortable trade-offs—like shutting off heat during a cold week—the end result was worth the temporary inconvenience.

Beyond the technical choices, the personal details make this transformation memorable. The image of a newborn falling asleep to the sound of construction is a vivid reminder that a home is a living project, not just a static design exercise. That sense of life continuing amid the chaos makes the finished rooms feel more authentic and earned.

So, is anyone else exhausted just hearing that story? Renovating with a single toddler can be a stretch; doing it with an infant and then expanding the work across multiple pregnancies is extraordinary. Meghan and her husband clearly put in the hours, learned to prioritize, and leaned on budget-friendly retailers and a few splurges to achieve a cohesive result. Job well done—Meghan! It’s amazing to see that these are photos of the same house. Now that you’ve seen the transformation, pick a favorite detail: Sherry loves the thick crown molding, while I’m all about those pendant lights.”
