It’s obvious from all the embedded music videos and song-titled posts that John and I are huge music fans. John even mentions that he sings a lot in a previous post, and I have my own youthful music-related embarrassments (yes, I once used the word “phat” on national TV). So when a musician friend in Richmond casually invited us to their studio to mess around, we couldn’t resist. One thing led to another, and we poured our DIY energy into a homemade tune. The result is a playful, house-centric song full of life lessons, renovation mishaps, design rules we follow and sometimes break, and a whole lot of home-focused humor — all set to a catchy beat.
We’re hardly rap legends, but after getting an edited version of our track back from the studio, we decided to officially release our first single, titled Hush.
Without further ado, here’s our amateur yet enthusiastic music video:
If you can’t watch it right now because you’re at work, save it for later — it’s worth a look. Here’s a quick preview of what to expect:
- My hair is down for once
- There are some entertaining special effects
- Burger and Clara make cameo appearances
- Several ceramic animals put in an appearance
- We style shelves and showcase a few decorating moments
- We remind viewers about the importance of safety glasses while working on projects
Before you press play, a little confession: we didn’t record a full studio session. Instead, we made a short, playful recording at home. We rapped a few lines into a computer microphone, applied some stock vocal effects in Final Cut Pro, and layered it onto a free instrumental we found online. Then we edited together a deliberately cliché music video using footage shot around the house. The result is silly, sincere, and exactly what we intended: a fun bit of creative play.
It was surprisingly entertaining — probably more fun than a pair of 31-year-olds should expect to have. We even managed to work the words “miter saw” into a verse, which feels like a true DIY milestone. This video is part of an ongoing April Fool’s tradition we keep up every year, and while we’ve pulled a variety of stunts in the past, this year’s effort is one of our favorites. It captures the same sense of whimsy and home-focused charm that our readers have come to expect, while letting us indulge a musical side that doesn’t normally make it into our day-to-day posts.
We hope it brings a smile to your face. Whether you get fooled or not, we had a blast making it. If nothing else, it’s a reminder that creativity can take many forms — from paint swatches to beats and rhymes — and that trying something silly now and then is one of the best parts of life at home.
Enjoy the video when you can — and don’t forget your safety glasses.
