DIY Gourd Projects for Fall Home Decor

[ad_1]

Yes, that was a gourd pun. My favorite seasonal post title to date was “Oh My Gourd” (I’ve used it before), and this post continues that lighthearted trend. This time I’m writing about decorating with gourds—specifically faux gourds that I turned into glossy white accents. I like adding a little seasonal interest to our home in small, inexpensive ways. I’ve shared Halloween and Thanksgiving decorating ideas in the past, and these painted gourds are another easy addition that bridges both holidays.

On a recent trip to JoAnn Fabrics I found a handful of faux gourds on clearance. They were marked down from $2.99 each to half price, so I picked up all five for $7.45. They were made of dense foam, heavier than I expected for craft items, which made them feel more substantial and convincing than typical foam pieces.

Once home, I decided to keep the styling simple and consistent with my love for white, ceramic-like décor. I sprayed each gourd with glossy white paint, applying several thin coats to build up a smooth, even finish. The spray process is quick and forgiving; I allowed a few minutes between coats and let them dry thoroughly for a couple of hours. The result was remarkably realistic—glossy, ceramic-like surfaces that also feel surprisingly solid to the touch.

After the paint dried, I arranged the gourds together on a ceramic cake stand. Grouping them this way creates a small vignette that can easily transition between autumn celebrations. The neutral white finish gives the display a modern, understated vibe that complements other seasonal touches, whether the rest of the décor is spooky and playful for Halloween or warm and cozy for Thanksgiving.

One of the advantages of using faux gourds is durability and reusability. Unlike real squash that will eventually soften and decay, these painted foam gourds can be stored and reused for years. If you prefer a different aesthetic, you can adapt this project by choosing metallic paints, matte finishes, or even subtle hand-painted patterns. But for my home, the glossy white look blends well with the ceramic and neutral accents I already use.

This project is budget-friendly and low-effort. Buying on sale and using items you already have—like spray paint and a cake stand—keeps costs down while delivering a polished result. It’s a great option for anyone who likes to refresh seasonal décor without a big investment or a lot of time. The finished gourds are lightweight enough to move around easily, yet heavy enough to stay stable on a pedestal or tabletop arrangement.

I plan to incorporate these gourds into multiple displays this season. For Halloween, they’ll sit among black taper candles and a few textured linens to add contrast without being overtly thematic. For Thanksgiving, they’ll pair nicely with natural materials—wooden platters, woven runners, and soft candlelight—to create a calm, elegant centerpiece that still feels autumnal.

What are you doing to welcome the changing season and the upcoming holidays? Small touches make a big difference: swapping throw pillows, adding a few seasonal objects to a shelf, or creating a simple centerpiece can make your home feel refreshed. For me, painting these faux gourds was an enjoyable and effective way to update my décor with minimal time and expense. Plus, it satisfied the small thrill of finding a good craft sale score.

As a final note, if you come across inexpensive faux gourds on clearance, give this spray-paint approach a try. The transformation is quick, the materials are inexpensive, and the result is a crisp, wearable accent for both Halloween and Thanksgiving displays.
