Episode 39: Make House Cleaning Less Miserable

[ad_1]

Surprising as it sounds, even professional house cleaners aren’t thrilled about cleaning. We invited YouTube cleaning expert Melissa Maker to share practical tips that make chores faster, more effective, and a lot less painful. Sherry explores the cozy Danish idea of “hygge”—how simple comforts and atmosphere can make your home feel happier. We also dig into the quirky history behind a beloved household product and recount a ridiculously fun thrift-store date night that had the whole neighborhood laughing with (and at) us.

What’s New

Cozy living space and hygge book

  • Sherry fell for The Little Book of Hygge — a compact guide to creating warmth and comfort at home.
  • As promised, here are a few photos from our neighborhood Thrift Store Date Night. We had such a blast—and apparently looked fabulous.

  • Quick note: John bought the pink-tie outfit (center) and Sherry snagged the sparkly purple dress on the far right.

What’s Not

  • We referenced a Mental Floss piece about Dr. Bronner and his famous soap: “15 Things You Didn’t Know About Dr. Bronner And His Magic Soap.”
  • There’s also a documentary about him titled Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soapbox.
  • Sherry’s favorite scent is the almond Dr. Bronner’s soap. It dilutes well and lasts a long time.

Melissa Maker, Clean My Space

  • Melissa shares practical cleaning routines, product recommendations, and time-saving methods on her site Clean My Space and on her YouTube channel.
  • Her new book, also titled Clean My Space, is a handy reference for tools, products, and techniques featured in the episode.

We’re Digging

Scrub Daddy sponge and shoes

  • We raved about Scrub Daddy (and Scrub Mommy). We found 3-packs at Bed Bath & Beyond and also online—these sponges are versatile and popular for a reason.
  • Scrub Daddy started on Shark Tank and became one of the show’s biggest breakout successes.
  • In the photo above you can also spot Sherry’s new favorite shoes (currently on sale). Her go-to jeans were in the wash, so she improvised—and discovered she didn’t love the slightly baggy knees on the pair she had on.
  • And yes, someone always asks about my shoes—so here they are, available from a few retailers depending on color and stock.

Looking for something we featured in an earlier episode but can’t remember where? We keep a master list of everything we’ve been digging across past shows for easy reference.
