How Minimalism Nearly Ruined Our Christmas

[ad_1]

Happy 2017! To kick off the new year, we’re sharing the show notes for Episode 30 of Young House Love Has A Podcast. On this episode we invited listeners to call in with their house-related resolutions for 2017, and you delivered a fantastic assortment of ideas. We play some favorite voicemails, talk through the home projects we hope to tackle this year, and share a few stories from the holidays — including why the presents under our tree gave us pause on Christmas Eve and how we discovered something smoldering in our son’s bedroom. We also discuss design and lifestyle trends Pinterest is predicting for the year ahead.

You can still download this episode from your preferred podcast app. Use these show notes to find the products, resources, and images we mentioned on the episode.

What’s New

Phone charger

  • Here’s a quick list of gifts and items we mentioned on the episode:
    • The fancy phone charger shown above — it has a weighted knot on the cord that keeps it from slipping behind the nightstand, which we love.
    • Sherry’s recent book finds: a new Domino title and Absolutely Beautiful Things, both full of inspiring ideas for the home.
    • The saw we’ve been eyeing is a sliding compound miter saw, ideally paired with a folding, collapsible stand for easy transport and storage.
  • We watched the Minimalism documentary on Netflix on Christmas Eve and appreciated its thoughtful perspective on owning less. It features a cameo from a friend we know and offers a lot to consider when thinking about simplifying possessions.
  • Project 333 came up in conversation as a straightforward way to pare down your closet and wear fewer, more intentional items for a short period of time.
  • We brought out Card Against Humanity for game night and worked through a few expansion packs — a fun, chaotic way to spend an evening with friends.
  • Near the end of the episode we mention a small kitchen reorganization: we created a dedicated “homework drawer” by shifting a couple of items around. It’s a simple change that keeps school supplies organized and handy.

What’s Not

  • We talked about Pinterest’s list of trends for 2017, a helpful roundup of what people are searching for and pinning as creative inspiration.
  • We also referenced last year’s Pinterest list to compare trends and see what’s changing over time.
  • A short write-up in a popular lifestyle publication summed up ten of their favorite trends for 2017 and served as a jumping-off point for that part of our conversation.

2017 House Resolutions

  • If you enjoy reading our past resolutions, you’ll notice common themes: balancing life and home, simplifying belongings, and focusing on projects that matter most. We’ve linked to several past years’ resolutions in the episode for anyone who wants to read back through our goals and progress.
  • Although we’re no longer taking resolution calls for this episode, we still welcome your decorating and DIY questions on our voicemail for future shows. Leave a message and we may answer it on a later episode.

We’re Digging

Mermaid pillows

  • Sherry is currently obsessed with novelty throw pillows — the mermaid-style reversible sequined pillows were a particular favorite. They come in multiple colorways and make a playful accent on a bed or couch.
  • We found a short, relaxing video demonstrating how these pillows look in motion, which made us appreciate the tactile, whimsical appeal even more.
  • We also purchased a set of wireless LED candles that we absolutely love. They include an automatic on/off timer and a brighter side that faces the street, so they read nicely from outside without creating glare inside the house.

Psst — if you’re trying to track down something we’ve mentioned in a past episode but can’t remember which show notes to open, we compiled a master list of everything we’ve been digging across past episodes. It’s an easy way to find recommendations and ideas from previous shows.
