How to Add Basement Storage: Practical Ideas and Tips

[ad_1]

Thanks to the generous support from True Value, we finally have a fully dry, usable basement perfect for storage and organization. After prepping and waterproofing what used to be an infestation-prone space, the room is now functional and ready for furniture and storage solutions. A weekend trip to IKEA helped us bring that plan to life, and we picked up nearly everything from the basic mood board we put together.

  1. Expedit shelf (part of the Expedit Workstation) — $120
  2. Torsby table (already owned)
  3. Woven basket or two — about $17 each
  4. Two Aneboda wardrobes — roughly $100 each
  5. White storage boxes — $12 for two
  6. Green storage boxes for variety — $12 for two
  7. Expedit desk (included in the Expedit Workstation)

With these pieces arranged according to a simple floor plan we sketched in advance, the basement is coming together both visually and functionally. The plan helped us determine which items would deliver the best storage without breaking the bank, and it guided the placement of large pieces like the Expedit workstation and the Aneboda wardrobes so traffic flow and access remain easy.

The current setup includes two Aneboda wardrobes, the Expedit Workstation, and a few inexpensive accessories to make the room feel more finished. A couple of faux plants add a touch of greenery, and an assortment of storage boxes gives us plenty of hidden places to stash seasonal items and odds and ends. We also used the Torsby table along with a few wooden chairs we already owned to create a simple utility workspace.

There are still projects on the list: installing a new light fixture, rewrapping and visually screening the water heater, addressing the windows, building a DIY dehumidifier, and painting the built-in cabinet to refresh its look. But even before tackling those items, the transformation from a damp, utilitarian basement to a dry, furnished space is dramatic. Between roughly $350 in IKEA furniture (the Expedit Workstation was on sale) and about $400 in waterproofing supplies from True Value, the investment was reasonable for the improvement in utility and appearance.

Storage is the immediate priority. We haven’t fully organized the insides of the wardrobes yet — that will come after we pick up sealed plastic bins to consolidate seasonal decor, sporting equipment, and other bulk items. Stacked, labeled bins will make the most of vertical space and keep everything concealed behind closed doors, creating a tidy, low-maintenance storage area.

We also moved bikes down to the basement to clear room in the main house, and we’re planning a few decorative updates for the back wall to make the space feel more intentional. Lighting, art, and ways to disguise the water heater will be next. The goal is to maintain a balance between practical storage solutions and a simple, welcoming aesthetic.

If you’ve tackled similar projects, we’d love to hear what worked for you. Have you successfully camouflaged any household eyesores like fuse boxes, propane tanks, carpet stains, damaged hardwood, odd trap doors, or unsightly outlets? Tips for cheap, effective solutions are always welcome.

Psst — We previously hid a fuse box in the den, camouflaged an exterior propane tank, and covered some unattractive plugs and outlets near our laundry area. Those small wins give us confidence that the water heater can be tamed visually as well.
