How to Hide a Printer: Clever Ways for Home and Office

[ad_1]

We finally upgraded the temporary string handles on our Effektiv file cabinet to proper hardware, and the difference is worth sharing. After a brief flirtation with the jokey string pulls, we picked up black glass handles that feel much more finished and classy. They were originally $9 each, but we found them on sale for half off at Hobby Lobby, so they ended up costing about $4.50 apiece.

Installing new cabinet handles can feel intimidating if you’re worried about getting each one perfectly centered and level. I took no chances: I triple-checked my measurements and made a simple paper template to guide the placement. To center the handles, I calculated the hole positions and marked them 6.25″ and 9.25″ from the edge, then added a horizontal line 2.5″ down from the top to set the vertical placement. Folding the cardstock gave me a consistent edge to align with the cabinet, and I taped the template in place while I drilled guide holes through it. The little homemade guide worked well—simple, inexpensive, and effective.

Once I had a clean guide, I flipped it over to mirror the placement on the opposite door so the handles would be perfectly symmetrical. Despite careful planning, not every handle was manufactured flawlessly; a couple were slightly off. Rather than return them, I elongated the screw holes in the doors slightly so the hardware could be shifted and tightened into a level position. That tweak fixed the issue and the handles now sit straight and secure.

From a distance the black glass handles are a subtle upgrade, but up close they add a refined touch and elevate the look of the cabinet. Sherry already calls them “her lovies” and gives them compliments as she walks by, which says a lot about how a small detail can change the feel of a room. The handle shape also harmonizes nicely with the subtle pattern in our office chair caning, reinforcing a cohesive look when we eventually tackle more desk upgrades and decor changes.

Behind the doors, the file cabinet stores the practical day-to-day office items: our wireless printer, a camera bag, extra paper, and colored hanging files. The printer we use (an HP PhotoSmart C4780) fits neatly because the paper tray folds up when not in use. To route the power cord, I briefly removed the top shelf of the Effektiv—its modular construction makes that easy—and tucked the cord through the small gap in back. That keeps cords out of sight and maintains a clean interior.

Inside the drawers are the expected folders and paperwork. We replaced plain manila hanging files with a colorful assortment to make filing more pleasant and easier to scan at a glance. The colored hanging files came from Office Depot and were inexpensive in bulk; they bring a little personality to what would otherwise be a purely functional space. We also store various sizes of printer paper and supplies so printing and organizing are convenient when needed.

Overall, the cabinet feels much more finished with the new handles and organized interior. The change proves that small hardware upgrades and a few simple organizational choices can significantly improve both the aesthetics and function of an office piece like the Effektiv file cabinet. We’re excited to continue refining the room with additional lighting, furniture rearrangements, and desk improvements in the near future.

Are you similarly obsessed with hanging files or small hardware details? Have you ever dealt with slightly crooked hardware and had to make tiny adjustments like elongating screw holes to compensate? Small fixes like these can save a trip back to the store and keep a DIY upgrade moving forward.
