How to Recover After Another Whirlwind Weekend

[ad_1]

It’s only been a week since we shared our last whirlwind weekend, and somehow we’ve already topped it with an even more unbelievable trip. This time the adventure stretched to six days, crossed ten states and demanded forty hours of driving. Yes — forty hours of driving. It sounds excessive, and it was, but it was also completely worth it.

What pushed us to take such a long road trip? My cousin was getting married in Dallas, Texas, I had some unused vacation days, and we’re hopelessly in love with road travel. So last Thursday we headed west from Richmond, planning four long driving legs of roughly ten hours each. Along the way we paused for a restful and delicious day in Nashville, where we explored the city, sampled unforgettable BBQ and spent time with two of our favorite home bloggers. We even had a little celebrity moment when someone recognized us during that stop — a funny reminder that small travel details can feel bigger than life.

After the Nashville detour we continued west and finally rolled into Dallas just in time for a beautiful Sunday wedding. The ceremony and reception were full of meaningful DIY wedding decor and handmade touches from the bride and groom, which made the whole celebration feel intimate and personal despite the long journey to get there. After a heartfelt weekend with family, we hit the road again and drove two more days back toward Richmond, choosing a route that took us through Birmingham and allowed for more scenic views and roadside memories.

Yes, the trip included a lot of driving, but it was packed with memorable moments. We arrived back in Richmond late Tuesday night with our cameras full of photos and videos, and our heads full of stories. Highlights included the quirky hotel where we stayed in Nashville, a short video we made about how we travel with our dog Burger, and of course dozens of shots of the wedding details — from handmade table decor to the ceremony backdrop. We even rigged a homemade dashboard camera out of a tripod and some white duct tape to capture the long highway stretches. Those forty hours behind the wheel became part of the story, caught in time-lapse snippets and spontaneous roadside footage.

Road trips like this are more than just transit — they’re a series of small discoveries. We found new diners and small-town cafes, discovered unexpected murals and vintage shops, and reconnected with relatives in ways a quick flight never could. Driving through ten states gave us a new appreciation for the variety of landscapes and communities across the South and beyond. From rolling fields outside Richmond to neon-lit Nashville streets and the wide, warm Texas skies that framed the wedding day, each mile felt like a chapter in a travel diary.

We’ll be sharing several posts about the home and travel aspects of this trip, including the do-it-yourself wedding details, travel tips for long-distance driving with a pet, and ideas for capturing road-trip footage without professional gear. There are also plenty of behind-the-scenes anecdotes from our Nashville stop and the memorable hotel stay that deserve their own write-ups. For anyone planning a long road trip, we hope these stories and practical takeaways will be useful — whether you’re traveling for a wedding, visiting family, or simply chasing a weekend adventure.

In the meantime, stay tuned. We’ll be posting photos, videos and step-by-step notes about the wedding decor, our travel routine, and the homemade dashboard camera setup. For now, we’re catching up on sleep and sorting through hundreds of photos, grateful for the chance to combine family celebration with an unforgettable cross-country road trip.
