I Tried Making My Bed Every Day: What Changed

[ad_1]

One of these things is not like the other.

At the start of October I set a small, practical goal for myself: make the bed every single day. It isn’t a traditional New Year’s resolution, but with our house prepared for potential showings at any time, a neat, welcoming bedroom feels important. Beyond staging concerns, the simple act of straightening sheets each morning creates a sense of order and a small win to carry into the day.

For anyone who has let this habit slide, you’ll recognize the trade-offs. For months our bed lived in a perpetual lived-in state—blankets tossed, pillows misshapen—partly because someone in the household prefers the option to nap at a moment’s notice. That someone is Burger, our determined nap enthusiast, who used to burrow beneath the duvet and sleep until mid-afternoon. Reclaiming the bed for daily making meant Burger had to rethink his sleeping strategy. Here he is, caught mid-mission, trying to wiggle under the newly flattened covers.

If you want to try this with me, it’s an easy commitment: spend two to three minutes each morning smoothing sheets, fluffing pillows, and straightening the duvet. It doesn’t require special equipment or a lot of time, just consistency. For homeowners preparing to welcome visitors or potential buyers, a neatly made bed contributes to a tidy impression and can subtly boost perceived value. For everyone else, it’s a low-effort ritual that signals the start of a productive day.

Alongside the bed project I resurrected an old, college-era habit: drinking only water for a month. Years ago I called that challenge “Aqua-tober” as a personal attempt to curb my soda intake, and every autumn I seem to fall back into the comfort of cola. This year, I combined the two efforts: a daily bed and a month of water. The benefits are practical—clearer hydration habits, fewer empty calories—and they feel manageable because each challenge is small and specific.

Doing both has a surprising synergy. Completing a visible, physical task like making the bed makes it easier to stick to a less visible, internal goal like choosing water over soda. The morning ritual becomes a reminder: I’m committed to small improvements today. If you’re already a bed-making pro, you might enjoy taking on the water challenge with me. If you’re focused on hydration, try adding a tidy-up routine to reinforce momentum.

UPDATE: For anyone worried about Burger, he was initially confused by the change in routine but has adapted. He’s learned how to curl up against the pillows or tuck himself into a cozy corner so he can still nap without undoing my efforts. If you look closely there’s often a familiar lump in the made bed—proof that compromise is possible between human routines and pet comforts.

Whether you’re staging a home, improving daily productivity, or simply trying to form a couple of healthier habits, small, consistent actions matter. Making the bed daily and choosing water over sugary drinks are modest commitments with outsized benefits: a neater environment, a clearer mindset, and a simple sense of accomplishment that starts the day on the right foot. If you decide to join, start with one minute for the bed and a reusable bottle for the water. It’s easier than you think, and the rewards show up faster than you’d expect.
