For anyone wondering where the March superlatives went—here they are! A belated happy April from us (I really fought the urge to say “hoppy belated April”). With the new month underway, it’s time for our usual yearbook-style roundup of what March looked like around the Petersik household. We mixed in a few never-before-seen moments for fun, and as always, we kept things a little nostalgic. If you enjoy these monthly recaps, you can find our archive of superlatives dating back to January 2011 on the site. This month opens with a few behind-the-scenes moments that we hadn’t shared yet (and yes, it’s book-related).
Most Cinematic: The house turned into a movie set when our publisher asked us to shoot a promo video for the book. Our brother-in-law Todd, a professional photographer and videographer, brought his assistant Adam, and the whole scene felt like a film shoot. We’re still finalizing the edit, but we can’t wait to share it. You’ll even get a peek at some of those secret book projects that we’ve been hinting at.
“I Came, I Sawed, Then We Went On Vacation” Award: We prepped and started installing new floors the day before heading out on a trip to Portland and then Hawaii. Getting a head start on the work made it easier to leave the house behind, knowing progress was already underway.
Most Portlandia-esque: Portland earned its own award for being stylish, quirky, and thoroughly deserving. We loved spending time there—thanks for having us!
Most Inspiring: While we were in Portland, we visited a house that really inspired us. The design was fresh, full of personality, and featured memorable touches—like a giant map poster—that we loved.
Most Missed: Our Hawaiian vacation was already a distant memory by the time March wrapped up. Luckily, we took plenty of photos that we revisit whenever we need a getaway in our heads.
Hole-iest: We patched tiles after removing two of the kitchen shelf brackets. It was a small repair, but one that made a noticeable difference in tidiness and appearance.
Grooviest: Installing the tongue-and-groove floating cork floor turned out to be a satisfyingly tactile project. It felt right to give that a playful award rather than something cheesy.
Closest Call: We almost ran out of cork boards when we reached the laundry room, but a bit of clever scrap use saved the day and kept the project moving.
The Cherry On Bottom Award: Finishing the cork floors was the final flourish for the kitchen transformation—especially after adding trim and sealant to complete the job.
Our Favorite After: The kitchen reveal remains one of our favorite moments. After months of work, it was exhilarating to declare the space mostly finished and watch it go from dark to bright and cheerful.
Widest: Our new 42-inch TV felt like a big upgrade from the old 26-inch one. Subtitles and news tickers are finally readable, and we have plans to build or upcycle a larger cabinet to fill that wall better.
Most Gravity Defying: The floating vases finally went up in the guest bathroom as part of our “Dude, Get On That Already” initiative. They look charming and fit the space perfectly.
Sexiest Voice: Sherry recorded a whole-house video tour while recovering from the flu. It was our first tour in months and, despite the sniffles, her narration was warm and engaging.
Most Festive: We surprised Sherry on her 30th birthday by decorating the kitchen with ribbons in the morning. It felt small but celebratory and made the day special.
Mood-iest: We put together a mood board to kick off a mini-update for our long-neglected master bathroom. It helped us focus the design direction and get excited about the possibilities.
Most Rock-ing: The Rockport Grey paint in the bathroom finally gave the space some much-needed color. Painting made the room feel refreshed and intentional.
Biggest Pin-Head: Sherry built a hidden closet pinboard from cork, duct tape, and leftover curtain fabric. It’s a clever and practical addition to our workspace.
Biggest Pin-Head (runner-up): For the Winter Pinterest Challenge, Sherry sewed a bean bag pouf for Clara’s closet. It was a fun, cozy project and a great use of fabric scraps.
Boxiest: A little yellow jewelry box got a fresh coat of spray paint and instantly became a bright, happy accent.
Most Fun: We repainted a yellow high chair and gave it a few coats of cheerful paint. It’s playful and practical—a small project with big charm.
Least Fun: A sudden leak caused by a leaf dam on the roof was an unwelcome surprise. We inspected the attic afterward and confirmed that insulation, drywall, and wood were all dry and free of mold or odors, so the scare was short-lived.
What did you all accomplish in March? Did anyone else have big birthdays, finish long-term renovations, or tackle a small but satisfying DIY? Taking a moment to list what you’ve completed can be motivating—feel free to share highlights in the comments. It’s a nice way to celebrate progress and gather momentum for whatever projects and shovels lie ahead.
