Painted Christmas Village: Mini House Painting Tutorial

[ad_1]

I love ceramic things, and miniature versions are always cuter than the full-sized originals. So it was only a matter of time before I made a little Christmas village.

My project began with secondhand tea light holders—those little ceramic houses that glow when you set a candle or string a light inside. I’ve always stopped at thrift stores to look at them, imagining how refreshing a new coat of paint would make them look as a cheerful Christmas town.

One weekend I found an entire lot of tiny tea light houses on a local buy/sell board for five dollars. They were worn and in rough shape, but I saw potential and took them home to rescue and refresh.

After a good scrub, I discovered they weren’t vintage heirlooms—just affordable finds from a discount store—which made me feel free to repaint them however I liked. I pulled together a pastel palette inspired by beach-house colors I’d been considering: white, soft pink, mint green, and a gentle blue. I used satin-finish paint I already had, which gave the houses a matte, ceramic-like look rather than a glossy finish.

Once the houses were painted, I faced a new problem: where to display all sixteen of them in a way that felt special. Instead of lining them in a single row, I decided to build a tiered platform so the village would have depth and presence.

I was too lazy to go to the store, so I used scrap wood and batting from my fabric stash. I cut three 2×4 pieces to the same length (22 inches), stacked them to create tiers, and wrapped the whole unit in batting to suggest snow. I stapled the batting on the back and bottom where it wouldn’t be seen, then added a second layer to smooth out any irregularities.

Stacking three identical boards produced a neat, graduated platform that felt like dedicated streets and squares for the little houses. I wrapped and tucked batting around the sides and used small L-shaped batting pieces to achieve a clean, wrapped look. A final thin strip laid in front completed the snowy effect.

The whole build was low-cost: five dollars for the village plus supplies I already had at home. After arranging the painted houses on the tiers, the display looked charming and cohesive. The satin paint, pastel palette, and soft batting gave the scene a gentle, handmade feel—like a little ceramic town that’s always been there.

These houses might eventually move to our beach house as seasonal decor, and I’m already tempted to collect a second set to keep at home. I can’t stop at one village—I want to build a whole pastel county. If you enjoy small ceramic finds, check thrift stores, online classifieds, and discount retailers; a fresh coat of paint can give them new life.

If you decide to try this, choose soft colors, a satin finish for a ceramic look, and a simple tiered base wrapped in batting to showcase your village. With a little creativity and a small budget, you can become the proud mayor of your own PastelTown.

P.S. If you’re still shopping for holiday gifts or home items, it’s a good time to look through your stash and repurpose what you already own—this project was proof that small, inexpensive finds can become something special.
