Remove a Medicine Cabinet and Hang a Bathroom Mirror

[ad_1]

Our recent run of mirror projects has left me scraping the bottom of my pun supply, but the guest bathroom still needed attention. After replacing the medicine cabinet in our master bath, we decided the guest bath deserved a simple refresh too. Guests don’t typically need a medicine cabinet, so swapping out the old mirrored cabinet felt like an easy win.

The original mirror and cabinet were still functional, but showed their age—the metal interior was starting to rust and it looked like it had been there for decades. We figured we could replace the dated silver frame with something cleaner and more modern. Two screws and a few minutes later the old piece was off the wall, and the new mirror was up in no time.

It’s a straightforward change, nothing elaborate, but it was free: we used an old Target mirror that had been hanging around for a couple of years. The white frame brings a fresher look, and once we paint the walls (we’re leaning toward a muddy gray to balance the yellow tile) that white will pop and coordinate with other white elements like the trim, sink, and toilet.

While we were at it, we removed a bulky metal shelf and towel bar that crowded the room. Taking that out immediately opened the space and created a cleaner silhouette. Instead of the metal shelf, we plan to add two minimal hooks on the inside of the bathroom door for guests to hang towels. A simple piece of art or a framed print will likely go on the wall to soften the utilitarian feel and add a touch of personality.

Another change was removing a full-length mirror from the inside of the bathroom door. It wasn’t just about freeing up space for towel hooks—its placement felt awkward for anyone using the toilet. Guests might have ended up with an uncomfortable line of sight, which isn’t ideal. Removing the mirror solved that odd sightline and restored privacy.

Taking the mirror off the door was easy because it wasn’t glued in place. I removed the single side clip, then carefully slid the mirror out of the remaining top and bottom clips. Once it was off the door I unscrewed the other clips and saved them for future use. It was the kind of small DIY task that doesn’t require special tools—just a bit of patience and steady hands.

The door now looks cleaner, though we still need to putty the tiny screw holes left by the clips and paint over them. After that we’ll install the towel hooks. It feels good to eliminate the awkward “mirror-on-toilet” scenario and make the space more guest-friendly.

We still have another full-length mirror on the outside of the master bathroom door, and we almost removed that one too. In the end we hesitated: instead of removing it, we’re considering a different approach—adding a simple framed molding around the mirror so it reads as a built-in, intentional feature. That would keep the convenience of a full-length mirror while giving it a more polished, custom feel.

Small, inexpensive changes like swapping a mirror, removing a bulky shelf, and adding a couple of hooks can dramatically change how a bathroom feels. They’re low-cost, low-effort updates that improve function and aesthetics—perfect for a guest bath that should be welcoming without being fussy.
