It’s still picturesque at Casa Petersik one day after an eight-inch snowfall. Since this is the first measurable accumulation we’ve seen in three years of living here, we couldn’t resist sharing one more post about the beautiful white blanket Mother Nature laid across our property. The scene feels like a postcard come to life.
Now that the sun is out, the light has transformed everything into a brighter, crisper version of itself. Photographs capture the moment, but they don’t quite convey the hush and sparkle that hang in the air. It truly feels like a winter wonderland. Below is another view of our backyard, looking especially charming in the afternoon glow:

From the snow-covered arch where that photo was taken, you can see the back of the house in a way we rarely do. The fresh snow highlights lines and shapes that go unnoticed the rest of the year. Here’s a shot taken from that exact spot, showing the rear façade and how the addition blends into the scene:

There I am, marching down the stairs holding my red gloves. We took a brisk walk around the neighborhood after these photos were taken. Our house is a little like a mullet—business in the front, party in the back. The facade facing the street reads traditional and ranch-like, while the back, thanks to our sunroom addition, has a more modern and crisp aesthetic. Most neighbors don’t even realize the addition is there because it’s tucked away out of sight from the road.
Snow invites play, so I sculpted a little snow dog—a “Snow Burger,” to be specific. It was a fun, lighthearted way to celebrate the season and practice a bit of outdoor creativity. Small projects like this are part of why a fresh snowfall always feels so special.

John built one too, and his ended up with a different pose—mine is sitting while his stands with its back turned toward me. It’s funny how two people working with the same pile of snow will produce unique little sculptures. Each one has its own personality.

Out on our walk we admired a house we’ve always adored in the neighborhood. Draped in snow, it looks even more storybook than usual. We call it “the bed and breakfast” because its welcoming porch, classic charm, and the amenities tucked behind it—like a tennis court and pool—make it feel like a cozy retreat. There’s something irresistible about a home that looks simultaneously classic and indulgent on a winter day.

We often joke that we’ll live in our house forever, but wandering past that enchanting property makes us wonder what we’d do if it ever came on the market. For now, though, we’re content to admire it from a snowy sidewalk and enjoy the scene outside our own windows.
What about you? Did you get snow where you are, and if so, did you do anything fun with it? Is there a house nearby that you secretly covet, or are you settled where you are for the long haul? We’d love to hear about any snowday antics or dream homes in your neighborhood—share your stories and plans.
