Tearing Out Carpet to Renovate a White Kitchen

[ad_1]

When Barbara sent her striking before-and-after photos, we were excited to share the transformation. Below is her brief letter describing the kitchen remodel and the choices she and her husband made to bring a 1970s home into the present.

My parents bought a house built in the 1970s and asked my husband and me to take on the remodel. For decades the home stayed firmly in that era — dark finishes and heavy carpeting dominated the spaces. Once we started working, we discovered beautiful wood floors hidden beneath the old carpet, which set the tone for the renovation. Here are a few details about what we did to update the kitchen:

  • Cabinetry: We used semi-custom cabinets sourced from a budget-friendly manufacturer called HQ Cabinets.
  • Countertops: Installed Premium Black Granite from Contempo for a clean, durable surface.
  • Paint: We chose Glidden’s “Lemon Ice” for the walls to brighten the room and complement the dark counters.
  • Seating: Barstools are the Ingolf style from Ikea, chosen for their simple, timeless design and affordability.
  • Accessories: The wall clock is also from Ikea and ties into the casual, modern feeling of the kitchen.

Thanks for running such a helpful site. This project required a lot of work but the results were worth it — we hope you enjoy the before and after photos! – Barbara

Before: The original kitchen photos show a room firmly stuck in the 1970s. Heavy, dark finishes and brown carpeting made the space feel dated and closed-off. The dominant tones were deep browns and muted colors, which absorbed light and emphasized the room’s age. Removing the carpet revealed the house’s original wood floors, a delightful discovery that influenced how we approached the rest of the renovation.

After: The updated kitchen is lighter, brighter, and much more functional. Fresh paint in a soft lemon tone opens the room while the Premium Black Granite counters create a sophisticated contrast. Semi-custom cabinetry offers the storage and clean lines the space needed, and the glass-front doors add visual interest while allowing display of favorite dishes. Simple Ikea furnishings, including the Ingolf stools and a matching clock, keep the budget in check without compromising style. Statement pendant lighting above the peninsula completes the look and provides both task lighting and a decorative focal point.

This makeover demonstrates how strategic choices can dramatically change a space. Exposing the original wood floors added immediate value and character. Pairing those floors with lighter wall color and darker countertops creates a balanced palette that feels current but still warm. Affordable, well-placed purchases — like semi-custom cabinets and Ikea pieces — delivered a polished result on a realistic budget.

What stands out in this renovation is the thoughtful combination of cost-effective solutions and some bold choices. The glass-front cabinet doors introduce a sense of openness and personalize the kitchen, while the pendant lamps above the peninsula function as both practical task lighting and a design statement. Overall, the room now feels inviting, modern, and cohesive — a dramatic improvement from the original dark and dated space.

We appreciate Barbara sharing this project and the encouraging reminder that a careful, budget-minded renovation can produce beautiful, high-impact results. Have you tackled a similar kitchen upgrade? Which elements of this remodel do you find most inspiring?
