Townhouse Tour: Smart Storage Solutions Throughout

[ad_1]

We love touring a wide range of homes, from large elegant houses to charming, cozy townhomes. This time we visited a New Jersey townhouse that feels exceptionally welcoming — the owners have made it stand out on a block of nearly identical floor plans. Decorating a townhouse on a budget requires clever planning, and Heather and Christian put in the work to make their place both beautiful and highly functional. They’re excited to show us around, so let’s begin the tour.

Stepping inside, the open floor plan immediately creates a sense of space, even in every corner of this townhouse. The kitchen sits to the right of the entry and is anchored by a solid L-shaped counter that subtly separates it from the dining area. The living room is delineated with another L-shaped solution: a low-profile sectional sofa that keeps sightlines open toward the glass doors at the rear of the house. The result is a cohesive feel where each zone remains distinct without sacrificing light and flow.

Before they opened up the main living spaces, the home felt more closed off. The previous layout included a partial wall that divided the dining area from the living room. Removing that awkward 3/4 wall transformed the floor plan, creating an uninterrupted visual flow and making the entire main floor feel larger. Heather and Christian handled the demo themselves, using a sledgehammer and a hand saw to remove the barrier — a testament to thoughtful, hands-on renovation.

The kitchen is compact but efficient. Muted stained navy cabinets give the space character beyond standard builder white and pair nicely with practical solutions like a hanging pot rack and a wine rack. In small kitchens, vertical storage and open displays are essential, and Heather and Christian use every inch to make cooking and entertaining effortless.

To maximize utility, they installed industrial-style shelving mounted vertically. These Ikea shelves provide easy access to frequently used items and keep clutter off counters while taking advantage of otherwise wasted wall space.

The dining area seats six at a simple table, and when guests arrive they can pull up three stools at the nearby counter to accommodate up to nine people. This flexible seating arrangement is a clever way to host larger gatherings without crowding the space.

The living room centers on a large, comfortable sectional in neutral tones with pale blue and chocolate-brown accents that echo the rug and other decor. Aside from creating a cozy conversation area, the oversized sofa doubles as an extra sleeping spot for guests, demonstrating how multipurpose furniture helps small homes function better.

Personal touches are everywhere. The couple displays photographs in modular frames hung from a rod and a framed set of Vegas poker chips, all meaningful keepsakes that make the space feel lived-in. Their approach to art and accessories emphasizes memory-driven, curated decor over trendy but generic pieces.

One ingenious design move is a large square mirror placed directly over the fuse box. This hides an unsightly utility element while keeping it accessible and also helps to reflect light and visually expand the area—an elegant, practical solution.

The downstairs powder room is a standout. Inspired by a hotel bathroom Heather admired years earlier, they painted the space a rich navy to create a moody, sophisticated powder room. The transformation was budget-friendly and complements the navy-stained kitchen cabinets, tying the home’s palette together.

Upstairs the bedroom takes a lighter approach. Pale blue-green walls create an airy, calming atmosphere, while an oversized plush bed turns the room into a restful retreat at the end of the day. The soft palette and cozy textiles balance the darker, dramatic touches used elsewhere in the house.

This townhouse tour highlights practical, budget-conscious strategies for making a small space feel larger and more personal: open sightlines, multifunctional furniture, vertical storage, meaningful decor, and bold but coordinated color choices. Heather and Christian’s thoughtful updates prove that with creativity and a few DIY projects, a townhouse can become a stylish, highly livable home. Stay tuned for more house tours and design inspiration from similar projects.
